Jackie Chan Retires From Action Movies, Says He's Too Old For Stunts (UPDATE)

Posted: Updated: 05/19/2012 1:05 pm

It looks like "Rumble in the Bronx 2" will never happen.

According to the Telegraph, after years of retirement rumors, Jackie Chan is done with action movies. Currently promoting his latest fight flick, "Chinese Zodiac," in Cannes, the Chinese-born star revealed his plans to exit the genre to focus on non-stunt based work.

“This is my last action film,” he said. “I tell you, I’m not young any more. I’m really, really tired. And the world is too violent right now. It’s a dilemma -- I like action but I don’t like violence.”

Chan, who's appeared in more than 100 films, is one of Hollywood's best-known martial arts stars. He appeared as a stuntman in dozens of Chinese kung-fu flicks, including Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon," before breaking it big in the states with the action-comedy "Rumble in the Bronx." By 1998, Chan had become a worldwide superstar, appearing acting Chris Tucker in the first of three "Rush Hour" films.

Chan, however, also made it clear that his action-movie retirement does not mean he's quitting acting for good. “For the last 10 years I have been making some other different movies. I want to be an Asian Robert De Niro. I don’t just want to be an action star, I want to be a true actor. I want to get rid of my image ... I want the audience to know I’m not only a comedian. I can act. Day by day, year by year, I’m going to show you the real Jackie Chan.”

UPDATE: After making those comments at Cannes, Chan clarified that he has no plans on quitting action movies. In a Facebook post, he stated:

Hello all my friends and fans,

Yesterday in my press conference in Cannes for Chinese 12 Zodiac I said that this movie was my last big action movie.

Today I was shocked when I woke up to read all the news coverage that I was retiring from doing Action movies.

I just want to let everyone know that I am not retiring from doing action movies. What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working.

I will continue to do international action movies. And I will keep improving my English :-)

I love all of you!

Jackie

Thank you Mr. Chan for some memorable action movies, and best of luck on you new path.

The thing that i like, mostly on all of jacky's films is that after the movie, you get to watch the bloopers . . :) God Bless JC

Jackie Chan is our "Bruce Lee" here in Hollywood...good luck Jackie. I don't blame you for not doing the stunts anymore.

cdpflanzer, your sentence, if you can call it that, is nonsense at its best. How is JC your Bruce Lee? They both did movies in the USA. That doesn't make them "yours" by any stretch of the imagination. They both made 10 times as many movies in Hong Kong. Which has a film industry on par with Hollywood. Also, (are connecting the dots yet?) that is were they made their careers, and continue to be idolized there. In the same you you love Tom Cruise, and hang you poster of him in your closet. Also, he will still do fights and stunts, just not on such a grand scale. Learn to read better. Reading the headline than quickly scrolling down for a comment, is silly.

PS - Jackie (the immortal) Chan isn't going to read it, so why address it to him? You'd have more luck writing a note to him and putting into a bottle and tossing it in the ocean. He might get that one, you never know.

I always liked the way he wasn't indestructable in his movies. Like how you see with many of these films where the main character is completely untouchable.

you know, he says he wants to get rid of his image as an action star. But at the moment, he is in those insulting V8 commercials. Somehow those tow facts don't really go together.

We all love Jackie no matter what he does. His sense of humor is great, and he is more of an actor than we thought when he made Katate Kid. First time I ever thought a movie was better in a remake than the original. I can picture him in roles like Di Niro for sure. He is making commercials also. Whatever he does we will watch and you go for whatever you want Jackie.

Thank you Mr. Chan for some great movies. My favorite was the one with Will Smith's son. Cheers, Larry

Well, this is NOT a surprise. I like Chan- he's funny, is GREAT in his movies, but people get older, they just can NOT do the things they use to do- even more so with an actor like this and all the stunts he's done. But... it's NOT like we didn't see it coming, I mean his most recent stunts were for what... V-8 commercials and he looked a little slower in those- perhaps he should try the product he's a part of-lol. He's a good actor, maybe he should talk to Harrison Ford, Arnold S and Stallone- they seem to NOT remember they are OLDER and do NOT STILL have it.

I've been a fan since his Cannonball Run days. Love his work. Just hope that he can do as well in the other areas as he has in action & comedy.

He made us all cry in Karate Kid. He is a wonderful actor. I will always watch his movies.

I'm waiting for the next Rush Hour movie!!! Bring it on Jackie!!!

He was in a late 70's movie called "The Big Brawl" I was only 10 but I remembered Jacki Chan's name til this day. You just watch "Shanghai Knights" or any of his movies, they are hilarious. He cracks me up. The most important thing is he did 99% of his own stunts. The things he did on film far surpass, and I hate to say it, even the great Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee may have been the better martial artist (or not we wil never know) but the things Chan does, NO ONE IN HOLLYWOOD has or ever will do. As for the being the Chinese Deniro. Not so much.

Jackie Chan has been one of my favorites since the first time I saw him in Cannonball Run. Anytime I'm channel surfing and come upon one of his movies I put down the remote. But time waits for no one. I'll be watching to see what's next from Jackie Chan. True fans understand.

He promoted the action-comedy genre, so he will be missed as far as doing those movies. But he can still show up later.
