Dustin Hoffman Saves Jogger In England: Report

Posted: 05/08/2012 8:22 am Updated: 05/08/2012 8:44 am

Captain America and company may have spent the weekend saving us from aliens, but they have nothing on the real-life heroics of Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.

According to the Sun, Hoffman helped save an ailing jogger in London's Hyde Park last week. When 27-year-old Sam Dempster suffered a heart attack and collapsed during his morning run through the park, Hoffman, who was out walking nearby, came to his aid.

After calling 999 (England's version of 911), the "Graduate" star waited 15 minutes for help to arrive. When the paramedics got there, they performed CPR and revived the jogger.

“I have no memory of what happened. The paramedics told me I had been saved by Dustin Hoffman. It’s unbelievable,” Sam later told the Sun.

According to one of the paramedics, "When we were carrying the patient into the ambulance [Hoffman] walked up and said ‘Great job, guys’. He really appreciated what had happened.” (AP reports confirmed that the incident happened. However, Hoffman's role in it has not. The actor has yet to respond to requests for comment.)

Hoffman, whose last live-action role was in 2010's "Little Fockers," (he voiced Master Shifu in 2011's "Kung Fu Panda 2") is set to star in the upcoming drama "Very Good Girls."

Please God tell me I am missing something. You are saying that Dustin Hoffman is a hero for not leaving while a man lay dying on the sidewalk. A hero.
06:49 PM on 05/13/2012
They didn't say he was a hero. They reported what happened.

Hoffman did the right thing. He's apparently not seeking any praise for it.

A lot of people would have ignored the guy.

In actual fact your first statement is wrong. While they did not say Hoffman is a hero, they cut to shot of "other celebrity heroes" in their little slide show. Which by using the nominal term, "other" suggests prior subject is inclusive in this group of superheroes. Dustin Hoffman calls 999 and waits, while his coffee turns cold. Big time hero. Cameron Diaz (or whomever she was) was not paying attention while driving and rammed into somebody, causing them to delay their commute to work. What life savers... What role modeling heroes!

You want to see heroes? Go to your local VA Hospital. The long Term Care Ward. Might change your perspective. Then again it might not., Sounds like you all know everything anyway.

He should of started CPR, guess just us common folks know what to do.
06:51 PM on 05/13/2012
Maybe. You don't know the medical condition of the patient, and until you've been there you don't really know what you yourself would have done. Treating a heart attack victim is not as easy as the booklets make it look. I know.

This story cannot be totally true because someone who has no heartbeat for 15 minutes cannot be revived when the paramedics show up. Mr. Hoffman, please take a CPR course!!

Give the guy a break. How many lives have you saved?

I've saved 3 plus more as a nurse. Every citizen has a moral and ethical obligation to know CPR.

FACTS, something your delusion lacks.

WTG Mr. Hoffman. You are a wonderful human being.

Something is not right with this story. I certainly am glad that he called 911 and that the man is ok. However, it took 15 minutes for an ambulance to arrive? Too long. You cannot start CPR 15 minutes after a person has "arrested".. You are brain dead after 5-8 minutes so the patient would be a veggie at this point. I am a RN. You only do CPR when their is no pulse/breathing. Please do not post these stories unless you get all the facts and the story correct.

I'm an RN and posted the same thing before I read your post. Everyone should be required to learn how to do chest compressions.

Former EMT here. I had the same reaction. Chances are that CPR was not in fact performed and the man, while in difficulty and unconscious, was not brought back from being without a pulse/breathing. Unfortunately, people have a skewed idea of when CPR should be used and its success rate. Unless things have changed from the days when I did it (almost thirty years ago) it was rare for CPR to really alter the sad outcome for someone truly without pulse/breathing (and certainly not after 15 minutes). As far as comments on whether Hoffman should have started CPR himself, I am not sure what the UK laws are on Good Samaritans or what sort of training (if any) Hoffman had. Someone who doesn't have CPR training can really harm the patient if they try it. And if you think trained medical help is on the way, better judgement may be to wait, doing what you can meanwhile with anything obvious (e.g. making sure air way clear, getting them away from dangerous location like inside a burning car). But I believe the laws everywhere do not require passers-by to do anything. There are some instances where people have gotten sued for trying to help and (inadvertently) makings things worse. To my mind, and without knowing any more facts, Hoffman did the right thing.

It's great that Dustin Hoffman took action by calling 999, there's a lot of people out there that would not have even done that. Way to go Dustin Hoffman, you're a great human being and not just an actor.

I am a big fan of Dustin Hoffman, So don't take this the wrong way BUT the story said he called 999 then waited 15 minutes for help to arrive. Then after 15 minutes the "paramedics got there, they performed CPR and revived the jogger." What was he doing for 15 minutes? was he performing CPR or helping with it? Or is it just cause he is Dustin Hoffman and he dialed 999 he is credited with saving this guys life. The paramedics saved his life. It sounds like Dustin just made the call and then stood or sat there for 15 minutes while the guy was laying there dying and did nothing else.

Your correct, the story as usual was not written clearly or completely.

Gee, a Hollywood star getting headlines for something good! He didn't get a DUI; he didn't punch someone; he didn't father a kid out of wedlock. Good for Dustin.
07:25 PM on 05/08/2012
He didn't start CPR on the guy? He waited 15 minutes for them to get there to start CPR?
All he did was call 999,,,
Why didn't he start CPR?
hero?

Maybe he doesn't know CPR. There are a LOT of people who don't. I used to know, but it has been a few years. I don't think I would try to do it now.
