Box Office: 'Avengers' Breaks Record with $200 Million Opening Weekend (UPDATE)

Posted: 05/06/2012 1:20 pm Updated: 05/07/2012 12:55 pm

Marvel's "The Avengers" opened with a $200.3 million dollar weekend -- the biggest domestic debut ever. (Poor "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" got left in the dust with its paltry $169.2 million haul.) While the official tally for the weekend won't be determined until Monday morning, as long as Sunday's estimate holds steady, then "The Avengers" would become the first movie to make over $200 million in a single weekend.

Adding to the $441.5 million overseas take from last week, the superhero blockbuster has now amassed a worldwide total of $641.8 million. Call us crazy, but we smell a sequel. The release of "Avengers" kick-starts the summer movie season, and if a new box-office record is the opening salvo, it will be a hard fought battle for movies like "The Dark Knight Rises."

Check out the full top ten below:

1. "The Avengers," $200.3 million

2. "Think Like a Man," $8 million

3. "The Hunger Games," $5.7 million

4. "The Lucky One," $5.5 million

5. "The Pirates! Band of Misfits," $5.4 million

6. "The Five-Year Engagement," $5.1 million

7. "The Raven," $2.5 million

8. "Safe," $2.47 million

9. "Chimpanzee," $2.39 million

10. "The Three Stooges," $1.8 million

UPDATE: The final numbers are in. "The Avengers" racked up a jaw-dropping $207.1 million over the weekend.

In the original screenplay, Nick Fury made a $10,000 bet with Steve Rodgers. After Romney's infamous bet with Rick Perry, they had to re-shoot the scene.

Considering myself a picky movie goer (I cant stand plotless films) I must say I thoroughly enjoyed Avengers. Not since Avatar has special effects been done so well. Not like the cgi in Transformers, which are garbage and blurred. Each character was well done. The Hulk was awsome! This was the way he should have been made in the first movie, which was cgi crap. Thor. Iron Man, Black Widow, and the other heroes were also well played. I even enjoyed the Villan. The movie opened up action packed, and then nicely built up to its awsome action climax. With soo many characters, and so much to cover in one film, i was happy with the pace of the movie. As long as it was, I was left wanting more!! Not since Planet of the Apes have I felt that way. Definately worth its admission. I saw it in 2D with my 3yo son, and am considering going again in 3D, .. go see it!

I've seen this movie almost 10 times now and it's awesome everytime I see it and the character that made the movie most epic was The Hulk, Mark Ruffalo brought Bruce Banner to life and he goes Hulk it was incredible to see they made a really good Hulk. And now Mark has signed to do another 6 marvel movies so we're gonna see a lot more of him

AVENGERS SUCK SUCK SUCK!

Too Many Cartoon Super Heros in one Movie! Cluttered, Junkie, Crowded with Junk! Too Long of a Movie! I want the Money back that someone else Paid for me! Then on top of that, the Theater Asked for the 3-D Glasses back after the Movie to Recycle for ReUse! That's Gross & who does That?

Your capitalization of every other word really adds to your credibility. Sorry you don't like superhero movies I guess?

i can not wait to finally see this movie tues... sold out for 4 days around here...

the reason why these movies are so popular is because they are actually making the movies the way us nerds want them to... at least for the most part... we have always loved the stories and excitement of comics... cliffhangers as we wait for the next issue... spin offs that are as much fun as the main stories and sometimes better than... and to bring the movies together in the way they did is perfect... the excitement that was built up through those small glimpses at the end of the other movies, was awesome...

the movies were made and marketed perfectly... i hope they keep this trend up with movies... i'm tired of seeing these remakes... these super hero movies although taken from other source material, are new, exciting and done well...

I haven't seen it but there's alot of great reviews. I have seen Thor, Capt America and of course, Iron Man. I saw Hulk in the movies years back but wasn't impressed with that one. We enjoy watching the dvds and catching the insinuations and how they tie the movies together. In Iron Man 2, Coulton told Stark that he was being reassigned to New Mexico, which is an insinuation to Thor, who fell into New Mexico. In Thor, the Scientist mentioned having a friend who works with Gama rays, which is an insinuation to the HULK and in Thor and Capt America, there's many discussions related to Iron Man 2 and ofcourse, Papa Stark was in Capt America. The Creator of Marvel has a cameo in all the movies and in most, a one liner, which is really cool. So they've been playing them up to this point for some time, apparently.

Truly there is justice in the world. The film deserved every penny that it made because it did something that is was needed in today's cinema; it made the summer blockbuster awesome again. It was a very well made movie that was tons of fun to watch, and is worth watching again and again. I had thought the Blockbuster dead for a while, but now it seems the new age of summer movies has been born, at least it would be amazing if that is what this turns out to be.

It has been decades since Jaws started the blockbusting trend, it is just great to see that movies are becoming fun again.
