Elizabeth Banks Slammed By 'Surrender Dorothy' Director For 'Biggest Career Mistake' Comment

Elizabeth Banks Slams First Film

A director is firing back after "Hunger Games" star Elizabeth Banks called the indie she made with him the worst mistake of her career.

In a recent interview with Slate.com, Banks described her first acting job on the 1998 dark comedy, "Surrender Dorothy," in less than glowing terms.

"The guy who was going to be the lead in the movie ... right before we started shooting, that guy got a 'real job' [makes air quotes]," the actress recalled. "And the writer/director played the lead role as well because there was no one else to do it! ... And I thought, 'I'd better go to drama school and learn how to never have this job again.'"

Now Kevin DiNovis, who directed the film, is reacting to her diss: "I'm shocked and deeply hurt by Ms. Banks' comments, and confused as to how she could consider her first break -- in Hollywood or anywhere -- as a career mistake."

In a statement released to THR, DiNovis said that he was most offended by her comment about drama school. "What exactly does she mean by 'this type of job'? Because there she seems to insult not just my work, but rather the entire American independent film movement. Making movie outside the traditional studio system is an immense struggle. To have that struggle so blithely denigrated by a collaborator -- especially one in Ms. Banks position -- feels a bit like she's firing cannons at a butterfly."

He admitted that his film "may not be a grand-slam crowd-pleaser like 'The Hunger Games,'" but that it's "managed to earn a solid reputation as a contemporary cult film. I can think of a lot less auspicious films for Ms. Banks to have made her debut in. A few of them even turn up on her own resume."

DiNovis's film does have its fans: It won a grand jury prize at the Slamdance Film Festival, the Chicago Underground and the New York Underground film festivals and was chosen by Roger Ebert as the opening night movie for his Overlooked Film Festival.

The movie, about a junkie who is forced to dress up like a woman, has a 42 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes. That's slightly lower than the other "Surrender Dorothy" movie that came out the same year, which starred Diane Keaton as a grieving mother who's lost her daughter.

Banks has not yet commented on DiNovis's reaction, but she doesn't seem to regret her interview with Slate since she tweeted the link.

Remarkable that there are still people stupid enough to burn bridges like this. Guess what, Elizabeth? You've hurt your own reputation worse than his!

I'm shocked at the idea that actual training is the gateway to Hollywood. That totally changes my perception of, well.... everything. I'd like to say that her statement doesn't change my feelings about Banks, but she is part of everything, unless she somehow got training to not be, somehow.

Wow. Surrender Dorothy is one of my fave indie films. Wondering what Bank's true intent is here. Her career is (was) doing just fine, why is she dissing the underdog? What a bully. Guess I won't be paying to see any of her movies again. jeez...

We went to the Hunger Games with our teenage son -- he hated it and I thought some of the "scenes" were way too long. After we exited the theater, our son said, "That was the dumbest movie ever!" I wasn't surprised given I didn't really like it either. The movie is for tweens and it shows. Elizabeth Banks looked great & did an okay job acting so she shouldn't be throwing anyone under the bus, especially the guy that gave her an opportunity to get her foot in the acting industry door. Hopefully Banks will apologize for making inappropriate remarks.

I'm a full grown male, and I loved the movie. In fact I immediately got the books and read them all after watching the film. It's fine if you or your son didn't like it, but pigeon-holing it as a tween movie is simply not useful, and rather insulting to everybody who found it moving.

I'm a full grown male too (well, I hope not to grow wider) and I thought the hunger games was meh, OK. Just a little too obvious and telegraphed for me. Tell me if you've heard this one before: there's a big bad government/industry/nefarious science lab/school and an oppressed group underdogs aims to take it down ...

Yeah attack the independent film that was your first break into the film industry. What a tasteless and nasty thing to say. Banks went down considerably in my estimation with such rude comments.

Well lets look at it this way:

Some Things are just some things, and other Things are just things, but some Things are Certain things, and other Things are Uncertain things, so one thing is NOT like another thing, and another Thing may be different than your thing, so Things are Things, and maybe you have a good thing, but only your thing will know if your Thing iis a GOOD Thing. ! !

By " Thing. " ... ( . It Ain't Shakespeare Baby, but it IS HERE ! . )

Independent films are both an art form as well as projects that have a learning curve for all those involved. They tend to be projects of passion. It would be painful to hear an actor/actress slam previous projects, for all of those that collaborated with her in "Surrender Dorothy." She regrets working with Diane Keaton???

Sad.

Never heard of the director. I along with most of the people over 25 did not see "hunger games" and she looks vaguely familar. As to the "indie"film...never heard of it either. So her terrible performance is probably safe. I guess the "director" needs more ego boosting.

Hmmm, your comment is, let's say, questionable? In defending his presumably hard work, the director deserves the opportunity to air his side since Ms. Banks has much more media access. I don't see anything to do with "ego boosting" at work.

$ 27. per hour. ?..

So are you a day laboror that stands at Home Depot Driveways in a white T-shirt with Tennis Shoes, and a Backwards Hat. ?

I made $ 27. per hour in 1987... and $ 102 per hour from 1993 to 2008.
10:58 AM on 04/27/2012
$27 per hour works out to about $55K per year, which is much higher than the average person's income in the US.

Your comment is uber-snobbish. $102/hour can't buy class, apparantly.

The Hunger Games is absolutely studpid, why in god's name would you take another humans life, what have they done to you. It's all about making sure you live and allow another person to die. HOW FRICKING STUDPID. What is wrong with all of you and the teacher that published this book is fricking crazy. This world will be coming to a firey end.

have you read the books? It was a form of punishment, they didn't participate in the Hunger Games because they wanted to send their children to their deaths... it was a form of punishment that was the Capitol forced them to participate in. The country they are living in, used to be the United States.
