Best New York Movie: 'Manhattan' And 'Sex And The City' Tied For Winner

It's a big week for the Big Apple. The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off today, and tomorrow marks the 35th anniversary of one of the greatest New York love stories ever: "Annie Hall."

So, your dutiful Moviefone editor and Woody Allen-worshiper (me), took to the streets in search of cineastes from uptown and downtown to find out New York's favorite New York film.

We decided, as an homage to the la-di-da film, to poll passersby in four of the movie's landmark locations: The South Street Seaport (the bridge scene), The Beekman Theater ("Sorrow and the Pity" scene), Central Park (Truman Capote look-a-like contest) and 63rd and Columbus (end scene).

The results were -- you guessed it -- varied!

Some were ridiculous -- one New Yorker told me her favorite was "anything with Liam Neeson" (what?), and another told me "About a Boy" (which takes place in London) -- but a victor emerged. Well, two, actually: "Manhattan" and "Sex and the City." (Woody and Carrie. Only in New York.)

I think Woody Allen does a superior job using the city as a backdrop, but it's funny I never see New York as having a definitive film. Annie Hall, Taxi Driver, Coming to America, capture the vibe pretty close, maybe the original King Kong presents the grandeur as well as any movie, but it's just great scenery in the end.

Ok ..so who in the world rated these movies? Twelve year olds??? Home alone #1 ??? I can think of a thousand better movies such as Annie Hall....On the Waterfront etc..... These surveys are ridiculous !!

I love New York. I love the Woody. But it's kind of funny to think that Woody himself can't stand "Manhattan," and actually offered to make the studio another movie for free if they wouldn't release "Manhattan." I think a lot of people remember the beautiful cinematography, and stunning black & white shots (with fireworks!) of NYC. They forget his character was banging a high school girl, protecting his best friend from cheating, then after dumping the 16 or 17 year old high school confection at the film's end, still tries (begs actually) to get her, with plane ticket in hand - while getting in the cab, to give up her plans and stay with him (and not go study in Paris as both he and her parents had encouraged) because he's an old, lonely, emotionally stunted, horny egotist with a boner. Definitely one of his all time creepiest characters. And for all you 4:00 am NY dogwalkers - there isn't even a bench there under the Brooklyn Bridge. They had to bring one in! So if you plan on staying and admiring that view...bring a stool...and possibly a gun and/or bodyguard.
