'Rockford Files' Movie: Vince Vaughn Set To Star In Reboot Of '70s TV Series

Bad news for "Lost" fans hoping Sawyer (Josh Holloway) would take over the role of classic TV gumshoe Jim Rockford. Deadline.com reports that Universal Pictures is now developing the '70s series as a big-screen vehicle for funnyman Vince Vaughn.

The original show, which ran from 1974-1980, starred James Garner as an ex-con who solved crimes out of his mobile home in Malibu. After a recent attempt by NBC to reboot it with Dermot Mulroney in the lead fizzled (According to Vulture "The pilot [was] so bad that it seemed like a crime."), Holloway's name came up as a viable replacement.

It's not clear whether Vaughn's version of "The Rockford Files" would go the jokey, tongue-in-cheek route of other '70s-shows-turned-movies like "Starsky and Hutch," or strive to be a straightforward crime drama that happens to have a clever wisecracking lead, like the original series.

David Levien and Brian Koppelman have been hired to write the script and Vince and Victoria Vaughn will produce through their Universal-based Wild West Picture Show Productions banner.

You can read more about "The Rockford Files" reboot over on Deadline.

I sense doom... Vince needs to stick to what he does best - mindless comedies with jennifer - because he sure ain't no James Garner....

Why are they always trying remakes??? Don't writers of our time period have enough imagination to come up with a new idea for a TV program or movie?? Seems sad to think we have run out of ideas, or are incapable of creating ones....

Ugh, yuk and projectile vomiting.

Vaughn isn't fit to inherit James Garner's character.

Hope it works out for all the Rockford fans... but Hollywood brings fools to the set.

It seems the word ''reboot'' is becoming quite popular these days. Wikipedia may redefine that word to describe ''when you just can't think of anything new.''

Google it and you will find it says look under Hollywood.

I would rather see a farm animal play his part, he is not that good of an actor to this part.

This could really work out well. James Garner was awesome, but Vince I think has the right demeanor and humor to pull it off. If this was a weekly TV series it would "Rock" pardon the pun...very good choice...

Although I do not think James Garner could ever be replaced, I think Vince Vaughn will be a great substitute.

Good choice; keep it real. Important also is who will play Angel and/or Lance White!

I loved Rockford Files and think Vaughn will be perfect in it. Let's hope the writers don't stray too far off course.

Oooohh Vince Vaughn, he is soo yummy! I think he could do it, and they should have Jim Garner play his Dad on the show, it would be a big hit, I know that I would watch it.

Horrible choice. Jim Rockford was the exact opposite of the smarmy jerk Vince Vaughan always plays. He was also tough, which nobody will ever accuse Vince Vaughan of.

agreed.vince vaughns ramblings are more silly than funny.

Loved James Garner since Maverick. Will he be able to play his Dad or Uncle or anything? Still a good looking man (I was going to marry when I grew up)?

Use to watch The Rockford Files with my dad as a kid... loved that show. I can see Vaughn as a good Rockford.
