Thanks to its superstar power and comic-book following, there's little chance that "The Avengers" will be anything less than huge -- but is it going to be "Hunger Games"-huge?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, pre-release tracking for the superhero flick predicts it's got a shot at beating the unbeatable "Games," which debuted with $152.5 million last month and has now won four box-office battles in a row.
"The Avengers," which brings together Marvel superheroes Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and Captain America for the first time, is currently tracking better than "The Hunger Games." Audiences are also showing more interest than they did in "The Dark Knight," which opened to $158.4 million in 2008. (Its sequel, "The Dark Knight Rises," opens later this year and could potentially smash both films in ticket sales.)
That would put the potential debut of the Joss Whedon-directed "Avengers" closer to $160 million, which would best Marvel's top opening so far: $128.1 million for "Iron Man 2."
For now, you'll have to wait until the weekend of May 4 to see how much money the heroes of "The Avengers" rack up.
