'Three Stooges': Catholic League Criticizes Comedy Movie's Swimsuit-Wearing Nun

Posted: 04/12/2012 5:33 pm Updated: 04/13/2012 7:10 pm

The original Three Stooges was always considered relatively harmless (at least for the audience). Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the upcoming reboot of "The Three Stooges," which has already managed to ruffle the feathers of one religious group.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Catholic League is not happy about the film's depiction of nuns, in particular, the characters of Larry David and Kate Upton.

In "Stooges," David portrays Sister Mary-Mengele. The name is a nod to the late Nazi Josef Mengele, an SS Officer who decided prisoners' fates at Auschwitz. As for Upton, it's not so much her character's name -- Sister Bernice -- as it is her attire. During one scene, the SI swimsuit model dons a very revealing swimsuit along with a large rosary around her neck.

Obviously, this did not go over too well with the Catholic League. In a statement from League president Bill Donohue, the group said:

"In the 1950s, Hollywood generally avoided crude fair and was respectful of religion. Today it specializes in crudity and trashes Christianity, especially Catholicism. Enter 'The Three Stooges.' The movie is not just another remake: it is a cultural marker of sociological significance, and what it says about the way we've changed is not encouraging.

Donohue goes on to state that "the TV show never mocked nuns or showed infants urinating in the face of the Stooges. The film does."

You can read the full statement over on the Catholic League's website. Fox, the studio behind the film, hasn't responded to the criticism.

"The Three Stooges," starring Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso, hits theaters this weekend.

The first of many Disney films that have been accused of putting subliminal sex messages into their projects. In "Mermaid," the moment in question happens during a wedding scene, when the priest appears to get a little too excited. However, according to the animators, what viewers were seeing were actually the man's stubby knees bending. The alleged sexual reference prompted a lawsuit against Disney that was eventually dropped.

why do children urinating in the stooges faces anger someone from a catholic league?! I was raised catholic, and I don't recall there being any rule against jokes about babies peeing on your face when you take their diaper off, which is what happened in the movie. This is just some guy with a stick firmly up his butt trying to buttress his criticism of a "sexy nun". Once the catholic church starts responding better to sexual controversy within its OWN ranks, maybe it will have better standing to complain about the depiction of a friendly nun, who never does anything mean to anyone or indicates a proclivity to break her vows or have sex with ANYONE...literally, her WHOLE controversy is that she has a nice body and she wears a revealing swimsuit at a pool, with her veil and rosary still on...the entire joke being, "I shouldn't be thinking about sex around a person of the cloth, but lo and behold, I'm suddenly thinking about it...", and isn't that more of a statement about the viewer than it is about the woman in the habit and rosary? To say otherwise is to join that school of thought that women kind of owe it to men not to provoke us sexually...and that a scantily clad woman is kinda askin for it. It's admitting, "lead us not into temptation...because our religion isn't enough to enable us to resist it."

Why isn't the Jewish community equally outraged by the Mengele reference? Larry David should be ashamed of himself for crossing this line. But HE was the guy who urinated on a picture of Jesus on CYE so i'm not surprised. The one religion I don't see Hollywood poking fun at is the Muslim faith. But it's open season on Christians.

"Donohue goes on to state that 'the TV show never mocked nuns or showed infants urinating in the face of the Stooges. The film does.'"

I figured that Mr. Donohue was old enough to know that the Three Stooges "shows" were movie shorts long before television.

That said, nuns don't run around in public in bathing suits that are so revealing and shame on Fox (once again).

Well, now that the Catholic League hates "the Stooges" I will probably have to go see it.

I wonder what will happen when I go to see it.

BING! Nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition!

I guess I'll have to sit in the comfy chair...

Obama is the most offensive Stooge that the Catholic Church should worry about, no offense intended toward the 3 stooges in any way with the comparison.

I wonder why they're not screaming for a boycott on FOX NEWS.Let's see what's the relationship between FOX NEWS ,Twentieth Century FOX,and FOX Sunday night line up.
The way I see it Rupert Murdoch must have some type of agenda. Is he just a soulless greedy b@#sterd ;or is he out to divide the chattell into small easily manipulated groups .
I've never driven cattle or herded sheep;but it seems to me it would be easier to break the herd into smaller groups.
It's scary to me to think of the power this one man has with his money and vast media empire to 'herd" us along to his own end.Divide and conquer.
I'm anxious to see the outrage on FOX and Friends or from Bill O.

What does you rant have to do with the story at hand?

The Catholic church is rich. They can afford to purchase a sense of humor.
10:21 AM on 04/15/2012
Would you laugh if something stepped upon your own personal truth? At some point things cross a line and are no longer funny. I don't really care about this movie or the church's view of it but I respect the fact that they find it offensive.

Movies have been poking fun at nuns for decades now. Blues Brothers, Sister Act (I and II) etc.

I guess what I wonder is why the Catholic League speaks out against a silly slapstick comedy movie but remains mum about all the priestly child sexual abuse and the ensuing cover-up by the bishops, supposedly the "descendants" of the Apostles.

What's worse, nuns in bikinis or priests buggering little boys?

I get your point. But in truth, they've been scaring away people for years, ever since JP2 passed away. Church abuse scandal. Mishandling of the scandal. Roll back of Vatican II. Persecution of gay marriage.

And from what I hear the likes of Pope Benedict are *Glad* Catholics have been leaving because they think that now only the "true believers" are left. Well, I suppose that's one way of looking at it.

It's the Three Stooges. The title says it all. In 1950 they were funny. Today we'll have kids running thru malls poking people in the eyes and laughing about it. Ha, ha, ha. Nuns in a bikini. Ha, ha, ha. The movie appeals to the mentality of its audience. That's the summation.

In the THIRTIES, they were funny. Shemp and Curly did good work. Curly Joe was pretty good, but he wasn't Curly.

Maybe the Catholic Church should joinn the 21 st. century. A good start would be to let the Preists marry and they must be married and have children before they become priests. After they solve the wayward priests they can look into changing their views on birth control and and a few related subjects.
