Best Comedy Trio Movies: 'Three Amigos,' 'The Big Lebowski' And 'City Slickers'

This weekend, Larry, Curly and Moe introduce their jokes to an entirely new generation of fans when the Farrelly brothers' "Three Stooges" hits theaters nationwide.

However, if you've been keeping up with the critical response to the movie, you'll know that the reactions haven't been too kind. Apparently, eye pokes and nyucks don't mix well with cell-phone gags and "Jersey Shore" cameos.

If watching an updated version of these 20th-century pranksters isn't up your alley, then Moviefone has a strong list of trio-driven alternatives for you to sit down and enjoy. (Or, if you do plan on checking out the "Stooges," you can at least use the following list as a warmup.)

From "Three Amigos" to "The Hangover" to "Three Men and a Baby" check out our countdown of the 10 Best Comedy Trio Movies in history.

BEST COMEDY TRIO MOVIES

Loading Slideshow...
  • 'Three Amigos'

The gold standard for comedic trios. This 1986 classic stars Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short as silent film actors who portray the fictional Three Amigos. Unfortunately, a woman in danger mistakes them for the real thing and invites them down to Mexico to stop the notorious bandit El Guapo. Things (SPOILER?) work out in the end, but not before the three make complete asses of themselves.

  • 'The Hangover'

Although the beginning of this movie is less trio and more duo-plus-one, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Allan (Zach Galifianakis) end up coming together to form a rather dynamic -- and completely random -- team who hope to find their missing best friend. They even manage to get a stolen tiger returned to its rightful owner, Mike Tyson.

  • 'The Big Lebowski'

Pour Donny (Steve Buscemi) may have taken offense to being included on this list. However, before he could voice his complaints, Walter (John Goodman) would have told him to "Shut the f-ck up," while the Dude (Jeff Bridges) would sit there zoned out, daydreaming about bowling. (Clip above NSFW.)

  • 'City Slickers'

The 1991 comedy starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby taught us two things: Under no circumstances should three grown men from the city take a trip to the Southwest to herd cattle, and no matter where a group of best friends travel, they will always find something interesting to talk about.

  • 'Horrible Bosses'

Some of you may scoff at this 2011 comedy making the list, however, it's hard to argue the chemistry that exists between Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis, who play three friends attempting to murder their overbearing bosses

  • 'Three Men and a Baby'

In real life, three New York City bachelors taking care of a child that unexpectedly shows up on their doorstep sounds like an absolute disaster. However, in a movie, it's actually a fun disaster! (Also, there's nothing more entertaining than watching the mustachioed Tom Selleck struggle to change a baby's diaper.)

  • 'Airheads'

In "Airheads," Adam Sandler, Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi play wannabe rock stars who break into a radio station to get their record on the air. Then, one thing leads to another and they end up taking everyone inside the building hostage using plastic water guns.

  • 'Old School'

Frank the Tank! Frank the Tank! The second Todd Philips film on our list -- and the aughts favorite frat comedy -- starred Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn as three middle-aged buddies who end up starting a fraternity after one of them moves into a giant house on campus. There's jello wrestling, streaking and, of course, Snoop Dogg. (Clip above NSFW.)

  • 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'

You may think that this movie was just a one-man show, however, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) wouldn't have had that awesome day of fun without his sidekick Cameron (Alan Ruck) and his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara). See how well they complement each other during this Sausage King of Chicago restaurant scene?

  • 'Triplets'

Haha, just kidding. If this thing gets made, stay far, far away.

Harpo, Chico, and Groucho in ANYTHING beats any of the listed movies.

The author should be ashamed of his filmic illiteracy, and abstain from further public foolishness.

my buddy's step-mother makes $68 every hour on the internet. She has been laid off for ten months but last month her income was $17713 just working on the internet for a few hours. Read more on this web site NuttyRich.c0m

Oh Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski and The Hangover are hilarious to me but The Three Amigos, I thought, was pretty bad.

The French original 'Three Men and a Cradle' was light-years better than the stupid American remake 'Three Men and a Baby' - as was the original French 'The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe' infinitely funnier than 'The Man with One Red Shoe.'

Cinema had a long an illustrious history BEFORE you were apparently born ( your choices are all films produced after, what? 1986?). There are many films prior to this, and even MUCH earlier that beat the majority of your picks hands down -- “ Lover Come Back,” (Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Tony Randall), any of the Marx Brother, *Sing, Baby, Sing", the Ritz Brothers, "Some Like it Hot" (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, and Joe E Brown), you could even add "Easy Rider" (Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern) to the list since many found it both humorous as well as sadly ironic . . I mean really, if you have the "Hangover", and "Three men and a Baby" (a remake of a French film), you could consider these. . since many of them have stood the test of time . . .I mean BIG time some over 50 years . . .

It seems to me, if you're into film criticism/blogging, it pays to be pop-culturally literate -- if you want to be taken seriously!

"Some Like It Hot" was the first movie that came to my mind....Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, and I would say the third is Monroe.....three stars that will be remembered long after most of the stars of the films on this badly conceived list.....And my favorite...."The Great Race" Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon and Peter Falk.
