'The Hunger Games': Katniss Everdeen Barbie Doll Unveiled

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 04/ 9/2012 2:10 pm Updated: 04/ 9/2012 2:13 pm

Add a Katniss Everdeen Barbie to the growing cornucopia of "Hunger Games" movie tie-in products.

This week, Mattel unveiled the bow-and-arrow-carrying, braid-wearing doll to the masses.

“I chose to dress her in the outfit she wears during the games, since this is where all the non-stop action takes place and is instantly recognizable by fans,” designer Bill Greening (a.k.a. a real-life Cinna!) told EW. “Of course, she wears her mockingjay pin proudly on her lapel."

Greening, who says he's "a huge 'Hunger Games' fan," took his inspiration directly from Jennifer Lawrence's costume in the film, and touted the doll's "minimalistic style and details ... and makeup-free look that really embody the heroic character Katniss."

The doll seems to be blush and lipstick-free but appears to have Barbie's traditionally lush eyelashes and eyeliner, as if Katniss didn't quite wash off all that Capitol glitz before going into combat.

Katniss Barbie won't be available until August, but you can pre-order it starting today. To see what she looks like, head over to EW.com.

The designer claims they paid great attention to detail in making her costume, but I'll bet that the attention to detail didn't include making a doll with enough articulated joints that she could actually draw that bow, or run, or fight, or climb, or....
What good is the costume if girls can't play at doing the heroic things their heroine does? Barbie manufacturers need to do a complete redesign and give the doll a body that looks and works like a real woman's body does. Its about half a century late, after all.

What an awful idea. Barbie wouldn't last two seconds in the Games, teetering around on those stupid stiletto feet! Who thinks of Barbie when they visualize a strong, competent young woman?

There has been, among many others, a Barbie Wonder Woman. And, depending on which continuity you are going by, WW can crack planets in half.

There have been a zillion different Barbies.

Ahahaaaaa!

Only someone with a Green Lantern avatar would bring up the Wonder Woman Barbie, and that in one storyline she had the power to split the earth in two.
