'Titanic' Movie Mistakes: The 10 Biggest Messups From the 1997 Flick

It's unofficially "Titanic" week at Moviefone HQ!

Today, the 1997 blockbuster returns to theaters in three glorious dimensions, which means you can once again relive all the teary-eyed teenage memories you had watching the film over and over and over again.

However, James Cameron's classic flick is far from perfect. Like every movie, this film is riddled with goofs: Cameras visible in scenes, props appearing and disappearing right before our eyes, facial features mysteriously moving around an actor's face, etc.

In fact, just this week, Cameron himself admitted to making a mistake in the movie, when an astronomer pointed out that, after the ship sinks, the stars above Jack and Rose are in the wrong position. (Don't worry, they have been correctly altered for the 3D version.)

To celebrate the return of "Titanic," let's take a look at 10 of the biggest messups from the film. (And once again, a big shout-out goes to MovieMistakes.com, for helping compile this piece. You can check out the full "Titanic" mistakes list over on their site.)

When Rose (Kate Winslet) went to break Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) out of handcuffs, she decided to use an axe. If she missed -- which, obviously, she didn't -- she would have ended up cutting his hand off. However, if you look at the scene frame-by-frame, you can see that Rose actually did hit Jack, right on the wrist. Lucky for Leo, that thing wasn't real.

one thing I did really like about the was,in the scene when the ship was going down the crew had locked the gates to the lower decks in which was certain death for the people down there.I thank you for showing this truth in the movie how the english killed a lot of Irish people that early morning on April 15th.People should know about this horrible shame and sin thank you.

Are you serious? You mean there are those who will watch a film several hours long frame by frame to find some the the most inane, if not stupid, "errors" in the making of the film? Why? Again, why?
The phrase, "Get a life," applies here in spades.

i totttaly agree, but what if they went back to correct the errors in the movie just to remake with the same characters

Nitpicking nonsense.

Just a comment on the error in #9 — Rose's mole.

When Cameron created the replica ship, he created it with only one side — the starboard (right-hand) side. But when the ship was filmed for the scenes at the Southampton docks before setting out on its voyage, we see the port side of the vessel.

That's because the scenes at the dock were shot of the right-hand side of the ship, and then flipped in post-production. The trucks, wagons, and signs visible in these scenes were all done up with mirror-image lettering so that everything would be "normal" in the finished product. Don't believe me? Check it out on IMDb, or rewatch it yourself and see just how many of the workers, etc. are apparently left-handed.

This isn't the first time this has been done intentionally. When Gary Cooper, who is right-handed, made "Pride of the Yankees" about Lou Gehrig (who was a leftie) in the 1940s, the closeup scenes of him playing baseball were filmed and flipped. The numbers on his jersey were also mirror image, and in the scenes where Cooper batted he would then run to third base!

If you watch movie credits like I do, you will see a credit for continuity. This is someone who follows the filming over time and is supposed to catch things like the watch on the left in one scene and on the right in the next. Most of these Titanic errors are continuity errors.

Hitchcock had some of the best!

wth some of them actually is stupid like nr 3 ? why the hell would they edit the shadow ? and in nr 6 it is very possible that you could just not see the suspenders because of his baggy shirt mayb folding up and covering it ? and nr 8 is just a paralax error the railing actually kinks there and the gap looks different from different angles you can see the kink in the railing which explains it in the 2nd photo

I remember reading about Titanic flubs in 1997 and critics said the biggest mistakes were a) the fourth smoke stack should have been smokeless and b) Jack talks about ice fishing on a manmade pond that, in 1912, hadn't been constructed yet! But this is an interesting list of flubs that I'd never have noticed (except the camera reflection. I did spot that!)

No, no, no...the biggest mistake was everyone splashing through the water entering the ship for hours and them succumbing to hypothermia outside the ship in minutes. The next biggest mistake was my seeing it. I may have the order of these mixed up.

Am I the only one haunted by the Eisenhower dime Rose pays Jack with for the portrait, despite him not being president for another 40 years?
08:58 PM on 04/09/2012
Oh, good catch!
11:13 AM on 04/12/2012
You do realize that it's a Roosevelt dime, don't you? Eisenhower was on the silver dollar.
11:51 AM on 04/12/2012
Yeah, a small slip. Regardless, the anachronism stands, as the Roosevelt dime wasn't minted until 1946. It's clearly visible sitting on the table, and it seems to have been cut from the 3D re-release.
