Jennifer Lawrence Body: Too 'Womanly' To Play Katniss In Hunger Games?

When exhausting Internet curmudgeon Jeffrey Wells wrote that "certain female critics" may be "susceptible" to giving "The Hunger Games" a favorable review, he apparently wasn't referring to Manhola Dargis. The venerable New York Times critic gave the new film a negative review, while also calling into question whether star Jennifer Lawrence was gaunt enough to play the half-starved heroine, Katniss Everdeen.

"A few years ago Ms. Lawrence might have looked hungry enough to play Katniss," wrote Dargis, "but now, at 20, her seductive, womanly figure makes a bad fit for a dystopian fantasy about a people starved into submission."

Salon.com television critic Willa Paskin took some offense to Dargis's remark.

"I know 'Hunger Games' is about starving children," Paskin wrote on Twitter, "but given the universe we live in maybe [Manhola] Dargis could not call [Lawrence] fat."

In addition to Dargis, the Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy called out Lawrence's "lingering baby fat."

Lawrence herself has been quoted as being quite happy with her figure. "[I'm] so sick of these young girls with diets," she told Seventeen earlier this year. "I think it's really important for girls to have people to look up to and to feel good about themselves."

When Lawrence was cast as Katniss, some fans were wary of her shape on various "Hunger Games" fan message boards, but there were plenty of readers who lept to her defense.

"Whenever I see people complain about [Lawrence] being curvy all I want to do is slap them with my slipper and say 'WTF...are you BLIND!??'" wrote one fan last year. "Jen's got a really nice body and I don't understand why people can't accept it."

As New York pointed out recently, critics have spared "Hunger Games" stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth from the "too healthy to be hungry" criticism, despite the pair's "requisite buff young actor frames."

I think the critics are saying she looks too healthy to be playing a starving girl from District 12. They are not calling her fat. It's implausible that someone with poor nutrition would look as womanly as she does. I think JL has a terrific figure - one that I would kill for, actually - but that's completely besides the point the critics are making. I didn't read the book, so I don't know if Collins in fact describes her as gaunt. If Katniss is meant to be gaunt though, JL certainly doesn't look the part. I don't think any of us, who didn't the read the book, is complaining. She's beautiful to look at. Again, that's not the point the critics are making and I think some of the posts below completely miss that.

I don't think anyone is saying Jennifer Lawrence is fat. She's gorgeous. What they are saying is that she is miscast. In the book she is repeatedly referred to as being thin, and not just thin, but short. One of the main themes of the book is that she was so tiny compared to the other tributes (boys and girls) but her skills saw her through. She mentions more than once that the other tributes have 60 or 70 pounds on her, which is why she can climb to the tops of tall trees and they can't. This ability saved her life. People are repeatedly miscast in Hollywood, with actors in their late 20s playing teenagers and actors in their mid-40s playing twenty-somethings, and no one is accused of being biased when they point this out. For me personally it's a small detail, and I don't really care, but I think it's unfair to shrilly accuse a critic of calling her fat when that is not the case.

These are probably the same critics who complain about other actresses and models being too thin and anorexic and being poor role models for young girls. I saw the movie, she did a great job. And I doubt she's going to give much thought to these thoughtless critics.

Most of you people who are answering are missing the point. The critics are not saying she is fat as a person but rather woud have been much thinner, being half-starved in the context of the movie/book.

I have just about had it with all this "fat" crap. If you're fat, you're fat. If you're skinny, you're skinny. If you want to do something about it, do it. If you don't, don't. If your doctor says you should do something about it, that's none of my business (or anyone else's business either). If someone says you're "too" skinny or fat, and you are, you've just learned something about them - they're rude! If they say it in a public forum, then many people have just learned the same about them. In fact, these people need a mirror and a friend. The friend will tell them that they shouldn't make such comments because they are "too" (fill in the blank with whatever applied), and the mirror can confirm it for them. Really, enough is enough.

Where I come from, a shapely, good looking gal with a little baby fat is a very-very-very good thing. I do say with confidence that the majority of real men actually show a preference for such a woman. Of course, there is nothing real about the "critics" except that when most of them get what's coming they will drown in a cess pool of their own Kaaaarapp.

Her acting was phenomenal. She did an amazing job portraying emotions without even speaking. She really did carry the movie, and obviously she did a great job of it.

I think a woman needs to be shaped like a woman. Not like a stick figure! Any man that says he would rather have a 90 lb. model as a girlfriend probably is not too right in the head and should be kept away from young boys and girls! Ms. Lawrence is a beautiful young lady that looks like a lady. The two authors of that article really, REALLY need to pull their heads out!

As a certified clinical research nurse for a group of cardiologists, it appears that her weight is within a healthy BMI. She is tiny compared to many women in the United States. She is an excellent example of what a young woman should weigh. It sick how "Hollywood," and others consistently recruit actresses who are on the border of anorexia. Not something I want my young adult daughters to buy into!!! Stars like Marilyn Monroe and other “Pin-up” girls, as I recall wore around a size 10.That was back when curves were in and they were considered to be thin? To find out your BMI, you need your height and weight. You can find a BMI chart online, or check with your doctor. If you are within healthy guidelines, stay that way. If you are higher than normal then start eating healthier foods and start to exercise. One of the easiest ways is walking. Skip the elevator and take the stairs!
