'Midnight Run 2': Brett Ratner Set To Direct Sequel To Robert De Niro Classic

Posted: 03/21/2012 6:44 pm Updated: 03/21/2012 6:44 pm

In 2010, Charles Grodin spoke with Deadline.com about the possibility of returning for a "Midnight Run" sequel, saying that he'd "consider it."

Lo and behold, Deadline.com is now reporting that "Midnight Run 2" is a go, albeit currently without Grodin. Right now, the only person attached to reprise his role is Robert De Niro.

The first "Midnight Run" was released in 1988 and followed the adventures of bounty hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro) and his prisoner, Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas (Grodin), an accountant who embezzled millions of dollars from a mobster. The beloved buddy comedy earned $81 million worldwide, and was on the receiving end of some great reviews.

"'Midnight Run' is not a formula movie, because the writing and acting make these two characters into specific, quirky individuals whose relationship becomes more interesting even as the chase grows more predictable," wrote film critic Roger Ebert in his three-and-a-half star review.

The potential sequel would, at the very least, continue the story of Walsh. However, considering Grodin has all but given up acting -- he's been in one film since 1994 -- showing up for this flick may be a long shot.

If the mere mention of a "Midnight Run" sequel has left you sick to your stomach, wait until you hear who's set to direct: Brett Ratner.

Whether the controversy magnet -- who resigned as the Academy Awards producer last year after uttering a homophobic slur -- has room on his schedule for the sequel remains to be seen. In addition to "Midnight Run 2," Ratner has been linked in recent weeks to adapt "I Want My MTV" (about the beginnings of the music channel) and "Hercules," an actioner with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Hey, at least it's not, "Taxi Driver 2"?

Love the first one, can't wait for the next one. Sorrano gets out of jail and comes looking for Jack Walsh?

Anyone care to chime in on the storied past of this movie? I'm referring to when the original was first cast, and Robin Williams was their first choice to play 'The Duke'. Didn't Williams say no at first because he was obligated to work on another project, and then he came back after Grodin had already been offered the role? And after Williams did come back at the aproval of the studio, wasn't it Grodin who made a big stink about it, and even went public in his threats to file suit if he wasn't kept in the 'Duke' role? I do remember it going something like that. I hope somebone can clarify this for me. Joe B.

The ONLY move that had a great Part II, or sequel, is "The Godfather". Nothing comes close in sequels. Even Jaws II sucked. Hollywood should learn that 'If it aint broke, don't screw it up". Now with 'Midnight Run II', the entire story line will most likely take place at LAX to NYC's Kennedy Airport

STOP with the DAMN sequels!! Especially since they NEVER are equal to the original (lone exceptions Godfather, Alien)

"Superman 2" & "Star Trek 2" both were better than the original.
Lots more to list but I have a patient being checked-in.

I thought 'The Dark Knight" and "Lethal Weapon 2" were also better than the first...

One of my favorite movies, however I don't know if they can make it better or more interesting than the first one. At any rate, I'm willing to give it a looksee.
