'Iron Lady' Russian Translation: Meryl Streep Movie Gets Pirated In Russia With New Dialogue

The Iron Lady Russian Translation

If Margaret Thatcher's family had a problem with "The Iron Lady," you can only imagine how they'll feel about a pirated Russian translation of the film, which compares Thatcher to Adolf Hitler.

According to The Guardian, a pirated version of "The Iron Lady" in Russia features some very inflammatory -- and intentionally misleading -- translations, including one part where Thatcher is presented as "a bloodthirsty, Hitler-admiring leader, whose fondest desire is to destroy the working class."

That might sound outlandish, but it reportedly fooled one Russian film critic, who still gave the film a positive review.

Despite winning two Oscars at the 84th annual Academy Awards last month, "The Iron Lady" has been under fire by critics from the start. Even the trailer was criticized, because some felt it painted Thatcher as "over-emotional."

"Not one of those people have seen it," director Phyllida Lloyd said to THR last year. "It's very far from a biopic. You're only seeing some fragments of her political career and life from how it might have been, not how it was."

Streep won her third Oscar for playing Thatcher; the film also received an Oscar for Best Makeup. "The Iron Lady," which arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on April 10, has earned $95 million around the globe, including just over $649,000 since opening in Russia earlier this month.

Who cares why the Russians pirated the movie and distorted the image of Mrs Thatcher, but the point is that Meryl Streep was too damn good as she has always been, a classic actress, i simply adore this lady she has such a great talent-- Got Oscar for the Iron Lady too, that's great!!!!!!

Great film about a great lady who took on the unelected union leaders and terrorists and- Argie bully boys, who sought to run the country, and no matter what you may think of her legislation as to Trade Union and labour relations, no government- and that includes 12 years of (mis)rule by Union sponsored labour, has sought to change the legislation. It must be right if we're talking democracy.
Back to the film, the flashbacks were cleverly engineered embracing old age lapses.

I did not the interpretation of that movie. It made Margaret a very intelligent women seem like a doddering fool. Talking to her dead husband throughout the movie was really weird for me. Merryl did a great job with what she was given.

"Iron Lady" and "over-emotional" is a bit of an oxymoron.

Ask who, the Provos, the UVF,? Kind of pot and kettle comparison, as the other side was not particularly opposed to spilling blood combatant or civilian either.

The Soviet Union though fragmented, left a legacy that is still being practiced today in most if not all its former republics. Russia's "democracy" is a sham and it's still being ruled by political bullies and mafia like bureaucracy.

Thatcher was a highly controversial figure. Any portayal of the events of her life would rekindle the controversies. The film very cleverly showed the events through the lens of her aging memory. This is made clear in scenes where she moves along with groups walking while she glides smoothly, and also in the scenes of her youth that have stayed most powerfully with her. It thus does not tryto project an objective view. It is a very good film.

Comparing her to a certain German leader is outlandish (as it is comparing any politician to him)....
But saying that she wanted to destroy the working class is not that far off the mark...

Interesting how the director says the movie shows fragments from her life and career as "it might have been, not how it was." Apparently it's ok to make stuff up as long as it's someone whose politics you don't like.

There are libraries full of "made up stuff." It's called fiction.
08:01 AM on 03/21/2012
Yes but even when it's clearly labeled fiction, some substitute the fiction for the truth.

I don't think the Russian comment was too wide of the mark.

Pirating? Misleading translation? Not surprised. It's Russia after all.
