'Dark Shadows' Trailer: Johnny Depp, Tim Burton Team For Best '70s-Set Vampire Comedy Of The Year?

If the first images of Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins in "Dark Shadows" had you worried that it was going to be another one of Depp's "weird," post-Jack Sparrow paycheck roles, then watch the new trailer for the film immediately. Showing a spark that he hasn't had since, arguably, the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, Depp brings just the right bit of eccentricity to Tim Burton's adaptation of the cult '60s soap opera about a cursed vampire who haunts his old mansion.

Starring Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pffeifer, Chloe Mortez and Eva Green, "Dark Shadows" looks like it has more in common with those classic Depp-Burton collaborations you love ("Edward Scissorhands," "Ed Wood"), than those you don't ("Alice in Wonderland," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"). It's funny! And random! Also, Eva Green. That is all.

I knew Burton was going to do a disservice to Dark Shadows. But you the lion's share of the blame should go to Depp since he bought the rights to DS and hired Burton

What the hell are you talking about? This is a train wreck! Playing Dark Shadows like a COMEDY!? Are you efing kidding me!? I was hoping for the serious tone of the original, except done with the depth of today's movie making. To say I am bitterly disappointed is an understatement. Even though it is Depp, and he likes to make cartoons out of characters, I thought he was a fan... He could have done something great with Barnabas, but he's playing him like a bufoon. What a JOKE! The more I think about it, the madder I get. >: ( This isn't "fun," it's a tragedy. Blasphemy. I will NOT be supporting this crap at the box office.

I'm only going to be excited about a new Depp movie if they make some made-up sequel to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. These characterized, B.S. characters he plays are not my thing...like when he played Madonna in Alice In Wonderland.

My take on Burton's "Dark Shadows" trailer. Yes, I'm a fan of the original show and Hollywood just doesn't get it and continues to ruin classics with campy remakes.

Once again Hollywood has failed to capture the spirit of an original and once again those poor souls who attend this movie shall empty their purses and receive only a hollow experience.

okkkkkay - Dark Shadows fan here. Saw the trailer. Interesting new interpretation of the TV series. Was wondering if they were going with either the movie version or the tv version. They are going an entire new direction. Comedy version? It does seem to work. Can't wait to see the movie in either case.

The original Dark Shadows was camp, a soap for pete's sake. This takes it a bit further the way 'Pirates' did to pirate movies.

I'll see it.

Honestly this is very upsetting. I normally like both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but I was a fan of the original this deeply offends me. The movie itself is just matter of personal taste, but I speak for many fans of the series when I say that the writers butchered the franchise. This feels like a parody.

That's too bad, Jonathan Frid made a great vampire and to see the recreation made into a comedy is just stupid, why not an updated version of the original?

i was waiting two years for THIS i couldn't wait until this came out going to go to the movies now NOT!!!!!! i should have know tim burton would ruin it by making a stupid comedy. i hope no one goes. i will tell everyone i see not to go. so upset. i was going to take my grandchildren it is not worth seeing. how dare they we should boycott the movie!!!!

Burton makes brilliant visual movies. and sets up a great tone.
but rarely are they great. most of his movies have boring storys that drag.

Batman was exciting at least. Charlie and the chocolate factor was just boring and Not funny.

Dark Shadows looks funny but... wasnt this show a serious horror drama?
Isnt it disrespectful to make fun of a cult classic?

Yeah Jonathan Frid was in the original in '72 or '73, I came home from grade school everyday to watch that show, it was only on once a week. This looks stupid, a remake of the original tone and atmosphere would be great. I won't see this one.

I also watched and was terrified by Dark Shadows back in the day, I was in 6th grade and mom wanted me to stop watching it. MY husband and me watched the entire soap yrs back when they replayed all the episodes. This looks like it is going to be such a hoot, can't wait.

I was a huge "Dark Shadows" fan in the 70's and have missed it. This movie is going to be hilarious--can't wait! I love Johnny Depp. Whoever is responsible for making and casting this movie, thanks so much for appreciating its history.
