Woody Allen Stand-Up Comedy Routine Reveals 50-Year-Old Origins Of 'Midnight In Paris' (VIDEO)

Before Woody Allen won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, it came out that the director had flirted with "Midnight in Paris" since 2009. But it turns out that Allen may have had the idea for the film almost half a century ago.

The Nerdist unearthed a clip of Woody's vintage standup, where the young comic talks about his wild times with Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and The Fitzgeralds (and an added bit about a dental hygienist in the Gobi Desert).

And it seems Allen was sitting on a bit of a gold mine: "Midnight in Paris" turned out to be Allen's highest grossing film and, in addition to Woody's win, snagged three other Oscar nominations for best director, picture, art direction.

Maybe someone heard the routine a long time ago and said that it was a good premise but not a great premise but it could be a fine movie. And then laughed about it. And Hemingway punched him in the mouth.
