'Top Gun 2' Screenwriter Hired

Top Gun

Second verse, same as the first: the producers of 'Top Gun 2' have found a writer. Again. Peter Craig -- who co-wrote the Ben Affleck heist thriller, "The Town" -- has been hired as "Top Gun 2" screenwriter by Paramount and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Craig replaces the hired-in-October duo of Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz ("X-Men: First Class"), who were apparently too busy working on other projects to actually write anything "Top Gun" related in the last four months; Craig's script will be his own, reports Variety. (Fun fact: he's the son of Sally Field.)

Whether Tom Cruise will be involved in any "Top Gun" sequel remains unclear, but Cruise himself certainly sounds game.

"I said to Tony [Scott, 'Top Gun's' director] I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder,'" Cruise told MTV during press rounds for "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol." "Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.'"

Despite the fact that you probably aren't that excited to see what Cruise and Co. could "do now" with the characters from "Top Gun," Bruckheimer and Paramount sure are. After all, the original film grossed over $350 million worldwide back in 1986, and Cruise proved he's still an international draw with the massive global earnings of "Ghost Protocol" ($679 million). Of course, "Top Gun 2" has been in some stage of development for a while now, so whether this one ever actually takes off (GROAN, but couldn't help it) is anyone's guess.

In reality, if this were to take place as if 26 years of real time had passed, Cruise's character would be a desk jockey by now. I remember as a young kid in the Air Force at 20 years old and working on the flight line, the pilots who were 25 or so seemed so much "older". The Wing Commander seemed like an old man. Now when I meet or see Wing Commanders and such, they are in their late 30's and early 40's...my age. Most are on the cusp of retiring. Those who are not get only minimal flight time ( as they did when I was in ). It was always a big deal when our Wing Commander of the 388th at Hill AFB would get time to fly. They would prep either the wing's flagship or one of the 3 squadrons flagships and he would fly lead as one of the squadron commanders would fly his wingman position. If we were to assume Cruise's character were 25 in the first film and he is returning to play him again, he would be 51 in this film

i just get a little goofy thinking sally field's son will be writing this.. the only vision in my head of her son, is her telling him, "stupid is as stupid does".. dunno why that image is there..

Sylvester Stallone (already been cast and having experience with sequels) will play the part of "Viper". Unsettling, everytime he sees Maverick he says, "YOOO Mav"

Meg Ryan reappears in this sequel as a race car driver sponsored by "Goose Nuts", a breakfast treat.

Maverick will be testing a new missile named "The Snotrocket"

Is there so little original creative writing talent, missing from the exclusive club of film screen writer's?
When "Hollywood" has the urgent & critical need to make sequal's from twenty six year old film's.
Clearly, this situation is the genuine hallmark of a lack of new screen writing talent.Within the film industry.

the next Top Gun planes will have to be the vertical takeoff/landing version of the F-35 stealth fighters, if taking off from a carrier, since the F-22 (the better dogfighter) can't land on carriers. Tom Cruise will be training another pilot as much a rebel as he was. Stealth UAV drones would be used in Top Gun training exercises. Goose's son is all grown up, he blames Maverick for his father's death, and Maverick has to deal with training him.

Top Gun 3 will be about fat CIA guys dueling pregnant Air Force women using stealth drone fighters in training, because manned fighters will be obsolete.

I think it's a great idea, Tom Cruise in the Tom Skerritt role. You can't have Kelly McGillis in there, she's gotten too butch, but you could have Demi Moore, she was great with Tom in that A Few Good Men movie. Jack Nicholson (or Harrison Ford or even Kevin Bacon) could be the guy in the tower that says no fly-by. There are hundreds of casting possibiities that could make this a very watchable movie.

Demi Moore just came out of rehab! She's still dealing with her divorce from Ashton Kutcher.
A full grown man who is young enough to be Demi Moore's Child! She was also addicted to
prescription pain meds and anti-depressant meds too. Clearly, Psychologically she is not in the
correct state of mind to be acting in any film at this stage of her life. I guess that it is true what they say about "chickens". As the word is part of your screen name.

No, but the money they spend on it will raise the ticket prices of the movies I want to see.
