Peter Weyland 'Prometheus' TED Talk: Guy Pearce Stars In Viral Clip For Ridley Scott's 'Alien'-Set Film (VIDEO)

Lost in all the Oscar postmortem on Monday was a bit of "Prometheus" speculation designed to get "Alien" fans amped up. According to a Hungarian site (via Slashfilm), Guy Pearce's character in the new Ridley Scott film would be named "Peter Weyland," which -- as fans of "Alien" and its sequels and mythology know -- is one part of the Weyland-Yutani corporation, the group that sent the Nostromo into space in the 1979 film.

Just one day later, that rumor has become fact. Via screenwriter Damon Lindelof, here's Peter Weyland's "Prometheus" TED Talk, sent to you from 2023.

In the clip -- conceived by Scott and Lindelof and directed by Luke Scott, Ridley's son -- Pearce stars as Weyland and gives an assembled horde of tech-savvy TED attendees a crash-course in the mythology of Prometheus, as well as a promise: "If you'll indulge me, I'd like to change the world."

Per the TED 2023 site:

Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.

So, at least one part of "Prometheus" is pegged to "Alien" -- which doesn't necessarily make it a prequel, something Scott has often denied, but doesn't not make it a prequel either. You can find out more about Peter Weyland and Weyland Industries by heading over to the website, www.weylandindustries.com.

"Prometheus" is out in theaters on June 8.

I cannot remember looking forward to a film as much as I am for the release of "Prometheus". I am pleased that R.Scott has returned to the world that he created with "Alien". Should be a tremendous film.
