Jean Dujardin Academy Awards 2012 Best Actor Winner

First Posted: 02/26/2012 11:19 pm Updated: 02/27/2012 12:09 pm

C'est incroyable! Jean Dujardin won Best Actor at the 84th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night for his charming lead role in "The Artist."

"I love your country," the handsome Frenchman said while accepting his trophy. He had previously won the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA and Independent Spirit awards. He's the first French-born actor to win the award.

In the Best Picture-favorite, Dujardin played George Valentin, a silent film star coming to terms with his seeming irrelevance at the dawn of talkies. The nearly silent performance -- Dujardin utters only one phrase, at the film's end -- required the 39-year-old star not only to affect the acting style of silent film stars like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin but also to tap dance.

Dujardin's biggest competition for the award came from George Clooney, who played a downtrodden dad in "The Descendants." Other nominees in the category included Brad Pitt ("Moneyball"), Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy") and Demian Bichir ("A Better Life").

CORRECTION: An earlier version stated that Dujardin was the second French-born actor to win an Oscar; he's actually the fifth, but first male to do so.

Well bless my freedom fries, a french man loves America.

That's all well and good as long as he doesn't slip and fall and have to access our health care system. If that happens he'll be dying to get back to France where illness doesn't mean you'll go bankrupt or be denied care.

Remember "Singing In the Rain"? "The Artist" is not original & not worthy of best picture.

FYI, Oscar is an international award. It's not relevant if the winner is American or not.

"He's the first French-born actor to win the award; Marion Cotillard is the only other French actor to own an Oscar."
Somewhat misleading:
In 1959, Simone Signoret was the first French actor to win an Oscar for Best Actress. She was born in Germany of French parents. She was married to Yves Montand and died in 1985.

they are actresses not actors idiot.

If you saw the part of the Oscars that honored all the people in the industry that died this past year, women like Elizabeth Taylor and Whitney Houston, were labeled as actors. I thought it was odd but maybe they prefer that designation now.

Oh la la!   FYI:
The Lumière (pronounced: [lymjɛːʁ]) brothers, Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas [oɡyst maʁi lwi nikɔla] (19 October 1862, Besançon, France – 10 April 1954, Lyon) and Louis Jean [lwi ʒɑ̃] (5 October 1864, Besançon, France – 6 June 1948, Bandol),[1][2] were among the earliest filmmakers in history. (Appropriately, "lumière" translates as "light" in English.)
Asteroid 775 Lumière is named in their honour.

Félicitations, Jean! For the uninitiated, that's "Congratulations, Jean!" in French. Although I haven't watched many of the nominated movies, I was rooting for Jean because I feel that there's a clique in Hollywood that tends to dominate and Clooney and Brad Pitt are members of that clique, and I'm glad that somebody from outside the clique won!

The key to Jean Dujardin's win can be found by watching Norma Desmond's dialogue in a key scene in "Sunset Boulevard".

Do you love nuclear power? France gets 100% of their electricity from nuclear plants, and they sell their excess nuclear power to Belgium and Luxembourg. Just askin'.

his crooked teeth even makes him sexier and real... i don't find those perfectly looking veneers appealing.

I think the veneers can look good on some people, but they wouldn't suit him.
