It was over in a flash. The just-over three hour 84th annual Academy Awards telecast provided precious little surprises -- Meryl Streep's victory over Viola Davis not withstanding -- as both "The Artist" and "Hugo" took home five awards each. For "The Artist," that handful of trophies included major awards like Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Picture.

well now that the hype is over, suggest maybe the voting academy should only vote for the tech, stuff . writing, screen play etc, and leave the Best film,Best song,Best actor and actress and Best supporting actors and actress" to the GENERAL PUBLIC (include new one FOR BEST MADE FILM in RECEIPTS ) which would be more reliable then all the other "fill in " that most don't care about and then they would be over in a more Timely manner of less then 3 hours of what the general public thinks is a waste.

People get their rocks off every year by preaching about how 'alternative' they are to the Oscar picks and the Academy, and it's pathetic. The Artist was a brilliant film and if it wasn't your thing, cool, but it is beyond ignorant to dismiss it for being silent. The film was a homage to cinema, a celebration of why people fell in love with films in the first place, and whether you enjoyed it or not, whether you've seen it or not, you must respect that the members of the Academy (whose lives are dedicated to cinema) want to reward it's ambition and message.

I can't understand all the hype about "The Artist" It was a fine movie...especially if you're "artsy" and you enjoy foreign films so you are used to "reading" a film instead of watching one. But it wasn't "great" and although it's lack of wide commercial appeal is certainly no reason it can't win best picture, I do agree with many people that it should have been in the foreign film category. Yes...I know it's supposed to be silent, but it's still a foreign film. I felt the same way a few years ago when Roberto Bennini won. If you look back, hollywood will usually choose an art house style film, if one is available that year, over a commercially successful one. there are exceptions, (Lord of the Rings III, Titanic, etc.) but when Hollywood gets the chance, they like to think they know better than us and we spend the money on it. The iphone is the number one phone not because employees at Apple say it is, but because it's market share and revenue prove that result. And when are they going to offer a "best comedy" ? The best original song category only had two contenders. I know a lot of comedies are low brow...but not having an award for it leaves out a very large and profitable area of movie making.

"The Artist" IS NOT a foreign film. It was made in Los Angeles with an American Production Company behind it. It is an amazing film, and is also commercially successful. Please check on what constitutes a 'Foreign Film' - I don't have the time to educate you, but you obviously don't know.

I am so happy that Christopher Plummer won at last, but while giving his exceptence speech, it looked like his nose was very brused, all black and blue. I wonder what happened to him? Anybody know??

ACTORS JUST LOVE GLORIFYING THEMSLEVES. There are TOO many awards shows. Isn't being rich and famous enough for these egotistical, fame obsessed, freaks?? Let's face it, most of them are WEIRD; George Clooney is CREEPY dating women half his age, Woody Allen married to the Step daughter he raised, Angelina Jolie, who's father was worried about her mental health, and most of them are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Most of them are not people we should be looking up to at all.

its a high powered atmosphere, all those people vying for the same job. All those people having to look their best at all times under the microscope of cameras and paparazzi. No one tells them to do that but that is what happens to them. Trouble is the majority of them have had no college education something that would help them deal with the crap. Jodie Foster, Brooke Shields, who have been to college seem to stay out of the limelight.

"The Beginners" was absolutely the worst motion picture I have ever seen. It deserved an Oscar for Worst Picture, and that's all. The Oscars now have all the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Beginners" - not THE Beginners, was not nominated for best picture - Christopher Plummer was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" and deservedly so...he won!

Might as well just hand over ALL our awards to the foreigners. I thought this was an AMERICAN award show? What's the point of having a couple of awards for "foreign films" when the WHOLE THING seems to go to non Americans? And, reeeeally, an Oscar for a NON speaking(silent), REPEATED film? Totally ridiculous and stupid has gone the way of real worthy contenders. I think its become way too political and too pushed on "certain" films and people. The MOST disgusting part of it all was to give an award to Iran! I know after seeing what I saw last night, I will never watch awards again! What a joke!

Your comment reveals that, happily, the Academy still has taste and a mind. By the way, the Oscar was not given "to Iran." Just like the Olympic sports, the creative world looks beyond politics and shallow minds -- thank God! "The Artist" is a work of art.
Most of the winners were Americans unless Meryl Streep, Wood Allen, Octavia Spencer, Martin Scorsese, have somehow moved to another country overnight. Plummer is Canadian by birth, but has plaid roles in American films and theatre for decades and lives in Connecticut.
The Artist is a silent French romantic comedy. It was produced by Warner Brothers and distributed by Harvey Weinstein.
