LOS ANGELES — Academy Awards voters have spoken up for "The Artist," the first silent film to triumph at Hollywood's highest honors since the original Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.

The black-and-white comic melodrama took four prizes Sunday, including best picture, actor for Jean Dujardin and director for Michel Hazanavicius. Not since the World War I saga "Wings" was named outstanding picture at the first Oscars in 1929 had a silent film earned the top prize.

The other top Oscars went to Meryl Streep as best actress for "The Iron Lady," Octavia Spencer as supporting actress for "The Help" and Christopher Plummer as supporting actor for "Beginners."

How about going back to good old movies with good old acting.

There is nothing historical about this film. Silent films have won before, and so have black and white. Besides, they don't make movies anymore, only cheap remakes and sequels. Half of what they come up with is computer generated, nothing more than cartoons. Movie theaters are on their way out. Ticket sales are crashing because most new flicks are crap, nowhere near worth the $10 - 15 per ticket they are charging. They have kept them going by tripling concession stand prices. This is one of the reason so many good actors are appearing on TV. It used to be the other way around. Everything is geared for young children and teens. Soon the multi-plexes will be gone, and good riddance.

The only real award ceremony is People's choice, all the rest is political bull, and the winners are really not the winners they are nothing but friends of the voters. It's all a crock.
Just look at actors who are the best, yet never got an oscar, in particular, Leonardo D. Johny Depp.
Brad Pitt. And you can name the others.
