'Puss In Boots' Screening: 'Devil Inside' Trailer Shown Accidentally, Terrifying Kids

Devil Inside

Imagine you're eight years old again. You've just sat down at a movie theater with your parents to see the "Shrek" spinoff, "Puss in Boots," where a lovable talking cat goes around sword fighting and making cute jokes. You're expecting some kid-friendly trailers before the film begins, too! But, unfortunately, the downright terrifying clip for "The Devil Inside" plays instead, subsequently scarring you for life and making you sleep with a nightlight on until you're 25.

This is the reality one such audience encountered during a UK screening of "Puss in Boots." Before the movie started, the cinema accidentally played the trailers for "The Devil Inside" and "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." The children -- and parents -- were not pleased by the horrifying exorcisms or Nic Cage's attempt at the cultural understanding of his muse that is part of the zeitgeist head exploding into flames.

"Cinemagoer Peter Flynn told the Mirror his four-year-old daughter Laura "was extremely frightened by what were exceptionally strong images, even by adult standards ... I tried to cover her eyes." Another filmgoer, Catherine Walker, said: "It was every parent's nightmare -- kids watching exorcism trailers."

The cinema's general manager, David Denyer, apologized afterward, stating, "I would be upset if my children had seen those trailers, which were meant for 'Underworld Awakening,' the next film to be shown. We're investigating how this error happened and action will be taken if appropriate."

This isn't the first time adult films have been shown to unsuspecting kids at theaters. In 2010, children were given the torture-porn flick "Saw 3D," instead of "Megamind."

Has everyone here even seen this preview? I have seen many horror films and this preview is by far the scariest, most terrifying preview made, I cannot imagine the mental trauma that these children are likely having after viewing it. Yes, the theater should absolutely be held accountable.

I am so sick of everything being blown out of proportion it's just ridiculous mistakes happen big deal I'm 100% sure these kids with get over it just like any child that has watched a scary movie at home and are scared to sleep by themselves or have a nightmare they get over it. I swear I thought evolution meant things got changed for the better but in the human species it seams to be dumber and dumber and dumber at the rate the Human Species is going the neanderthals will end up being smarter.

the article doesn't say how long the trailer was on..So hard to make an assumption on it..But if it was a few seconds don't think a child is going to be marred by it..But true obviously kids shouldn't be seeing things like that..The parents making it a bigger deal will not help..Someone should be held responsibly but it was a mistake..get over it..I'm sure there is a lawyer out there just ready to sue..

You never been to a movie? If you do NOT want your child to see these trailers...do NOT take them to movies.....Actually....do NOT take them outside at all......for your child may see on the streets many things....like drunk people drinking & fighting. Sex on the beach. People defacing property. People stealing. Do you let your kids outside to see these things?

A little OT, but there were no movie ratings when I was growing up and I ran out of a showing of "House on Haunted Hill." Now when I see it on TV and the skeleton that scared me, it cracks me up. Yes, the exorcism stuff can be creepy too I admit.

I have been watching horror films since I was 3 years old. My mom just used to cover my eyes if there was any nudity. She also made sure that I knew what was in the movies was just pretend and make-up...like holloween costumes. Some kids are too sheltered...wussies! LOL.

Call it sheltered. It is teaching them to become responsible adults and have respect for themselves as well as promoting good morals.

Oops. Me bad says the theater manager. Me thinks the theater needs a new manager and now staff...

So for a stupid mistake that hurts no one this man should lose his job, and some wonder why America is going down the drain. I guess to appease people like you he should of also been drug out of the theater and burned at the stake also. For what over sheltered children being scared for a few minutes people like you make me sick to my stomach!!!

"Action will be taken if appropriate"...I think it's more than appropriate to take action!! No excuse to show the wrong trailer.

I think what he meant was, oops, I am the one who screwed up the trailers.

Oh big whoop. Id be more worried by the Disney pulp with its hidden agendas .
Now for something really humorous ,
The local Greek Orthodox church in my neighborhood ,back in the late 60s , a block away from a third run movie house ,
the priest of the church gets the theatre to show a greek film for all the little old ladies in black who don't speak english .
unfortunately , the projectionist , either by mistake or intent , switched the wrong reel of film with an adult porno film,
the theatre cleared out as if someone had shouted fire , and all these screaming little old ladies in black ran into the street shouting in greek ,working their worry beads in a frenzy.

...and you find this funny??
12:03 PM on 02/26/2012
He/She will get over it. I used to love horror films as a child. The parents just need to explain the difference between movies, and real life. Some parents are not capable of teaching their children, though (I guess), or some children are not capable of understanding.

I believe that if a movie is being shown in a certain cinema that has a particular rating (in this case a rating of PG) then the previews in that theatre should follow those guidelines. . .not going above the rating of the film being shown. 'The Devil Inside' (with a viewer rating of 'R') should never be previewed in a theatre that is most likely predominated with parents with thier children. It just goes to show you that even though guidelines are set for viewing, the theatre industry deems it nessesary to stretch the barriers by doing thing like this.
08:12 AM on 02/26/2012
I think that is the standard. I think someone slipped up.
12:33 PM on 02/26/2012
Yeah, for the most part, correctly rated previews are shown relative to the movie and audience. Surprise!!
