What Is 'Beginners'? Oscar Nominees 2012 Guide
Nominated For: Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Plummer)
What's It About: After the death of his wife, Hal Fields (Plummer) comes out as homosexual to his mid-30s son, Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Hal begins living life to the fullest, even after he's diagnosed with terminal cancer. Meanwhile, Oliver must contend with both bits of life-altering news, as well as his own crippling self-doubt when it comes to life and love.
Why You Should See It: Buoyed by strong performances from both Plummer and McGregor, "Beginners" was one of the sharpest, smartest and most charming films released in 2011. (Even Ellen DeGeneres agrees!) Mike Mills's semi-autobiographical film is heartbreaking and heartwarming, and speaks to the human condition better than some of the nine films nominated for Best Picture. Plus, there's a dog, Cosmo, and he's almost as great as Uggie. Almost.
It's Kind Of Like: Wes Anderson meets Woody Allen.
How You Can See It: "Beginners" is out on DVD now.
