Academy Awards: Youngest Oscar Winners And Nominees

Youngest Oscar Nominess

First Posted: 02/21/2012 9:00 am EST Updated: 02/22/2013 1:23 pm EST

This year, 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis received the Best Actress nomination for "Beasts of the Southern Wild," making her the youngest nominee in the category's history.

Wallis is the poster child for youthful talent but there have been plenty of child actors and actresses over the years who've earned their own Oscar nods. From Shirley Temple, the youngest Oscar honoree ever at six years old, to 10-year-old winner Tatum O'Neal, the youngest winner ever, sometimes Hollywood's next generation of stars do get recognized for their early achievements.

In honor of this year's Oscars -- airing on February 24 -- let's take a look back at some of the youngest Oscar winners and nominees in Academy Awards history.

One time I was a guest in a nice restaurant owned by a relative that also served liquor. The waiter at our table asked me what I wanted to drink--and I said "just a soft drink." So he starts chuckling and said in a loud voice--"Oh, so you want a Shirley Temple!"

I can't remember when I've heard a more fascinating anecdote.

Well, thanks. Makes me feel better after being blasted as a Mormon. The relative who owned the fancy restaurant in California told me one time that as a married woman with one child she was driving home late at night from her part-time job in a tire factory. The highway patrol stopped her and started questioning her why she was driving a nice car around late at night (as if she might have stolen it). I don't know just what happened but she never got over the experience and told me about it years later.

"In 1931, 'Skippy' star Jackie Cooper was up against actors much older than him -- and he's not even the youngest nominee."

Hello editors - this is BAD English! Why put bad English in a headline? To perpetuate its use? To show your ignorance? "..much older than he" or "..much older than himself" would be preferrable.

I'd like to see a fetus win one year.

Rick S. could accept it for a clip of a Republican mandated trans-vaginal sonagraph.

LOL..."accepting on behalf of because the fetus could not be here tonight"

I saw Haley Joel Osment's performance in THE SIXTH SENSE and Michael Caine's performance in CIDERHOUSE RULES...Michael won but Haley should have. I love Michael Caine because he is a phenomenal actor but in this case, the wrong person won.

Who cares? I don't need an awards show to tell me which movies are good.

It's not about YOU. It's about the actor and his/her performance.
