Steve McQueen: Michael Fassbender Oscar Snub Happened Because America Is 'Too Scared Of Sex'

Michael Fassbender

While dropping trou in "Shame" got Michael Fassbender a few infamous mentions (George Clooney comparing the actor's penis to a golf club, for instance), it might have been a bit too scandalous for the Academy's taste.

Fassbender and "Shame" did not light up 2012's nominations, contrary to the critical acclaim the film received. The reason for this, according to "Shame" director Steve McQueen, was as plain as day: the Fassboner.

"In America they're too scared of sex, that's why he wasn't nominated. If you look at the best actor list you're saying, 'Michael Fassbender is not on that list?' It's kind of crazy. But that's how it is, it's an American award, let them have it."

The great Fassbender snub has not tarnished the director's view of his muse -- they have worked on two previous films together, with a third on the way -- but McQueen just wants you to know he's not like, married to the guy or anything.

"It's all about the script, if Michael's the right person for the character and if he likes the script. What I like about our relationship is it's not tied, it's not a marriage, it's friendship and it's done out of respect of each other's talents and each other's love of film."

If McQueen thinks Americans are afraid of sex, why didn't he film it in his native UK or in Fassbender's Ireland?

He thought the shock value would get him an Oscar but it wasn't that good without the nudity.

How did this person of color get a crearlty Scottish or Irish name? Oh, I know, he stole it. His real name is Steven Rodney and he needs to use it and stop trying to cash in on the more fame worthy Mr. Steve McQueen who really was an Actor and Director. This Guy is si bad he was a has been before he was even a will he be.

Never even heard of this movie until I read this article. Also, I've never heard of the actors and didn't know there was a Steve McQueen who directed ever.

Basically, a nothing film about sex, directed by a nobody, "starring" a no one that nobody ever heard of, who are all angry because they got nothing for anything.

Sounds right to me.

Sorry, but these guys sound a bit whiny to me. Just because you give a good performance in what you think is a good film is no guarantee you will be nominated for anything. If you are acting just to get awards, give up now.

Hmm... with as many people as we have diddling anything that moves here in the states? Afraid of sex? Really? I think its more true we prefer to keep it private more than on the big screen.

No, America is not "too afraid of sex." We are tired of people who put out movies for shock value alone and then cry that they are not seen for their "artistic value." If waving manly unmentionables (so used as HP keeps blocking my use of the commonly accepted clinical term) around is their idea of groundbreaking and artistic, then perhaps Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender should examine their own preoccupations with their masculine parts instead of why they did not win an oscar.

No, America is not too scared of sex. We are tired of people putting out movies for shock value alone and then crying when they're not recognized for their "artistic value." If waving your genitals is your idea of being groundbreaking and artistic, perhaps you should examine why you're so enamored of you own manhood rather than why your movie did not merit an Oscar.
