According to the popular consensus, "The Artist" is going to win every major award at the Oscars this year, including Best Picture. However, there's always room for an upset. Over the years, there have been plenty of surprise Academy Award winners, from "Crash" beating "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005 to "Rocky" taking out "Network" for Best Picture in 1976.

In honor of this year's Academy Awards -- airing Sunday -- let's take a look at the biggest upsets in Oscar history.

Marisa Tomei DESERVED that win, and anyone who was "upset" by that clearly lacks taste.

I saw The Hurricane after the Oscars when Kevin Spacey won for best actor. Denzel Washington's performance outdid Kevin's basic Kevin performance by 100%, and I think Washington was robbed of the Oscar. I just saw The Artist not because I really wanted to see it but because I usually make the effort to see Oscar winning pictures. My friend and I fell asleep. The woman protagonist however was sparkling.

Some of these don't qualify as upsets at all. Hilary Swank, for example, was very much expected to win instead of Annette Bening

I agree. Annette is a good actress, yet she played another high strung uptight character, which is her comfort zone. Hilary played a role that stretched her acting ability, a challenging role for most to play. That to me is the edge and why Hilary won.

The Academy certainly went with much higher brow nominees this year which I think will lose them a large portion of their young audience. After doing better at being in touch with the public the past two years, these stiff nominees just fall flat. I usually have something in common with the choice but not this year- if the contenders seem stuffy to you, check out my own Top 10 Movie Picks of 2011 at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/01/top-10-movie-picks-of-2011.html where you won’t see a single of the Academy’s nominees for Best Picture but you will get some movie artwork I drew up as well as the reviews!
