The Secret World Of Arrietty Hayao Miyazaki

Telling someone that you like anime was pretty much like the kiss of death in high school. While I can honestly say that my interest in anime may have started in elementary school after watching "Sailor Moon" everyday before school, it turned into a full-fledged obsession the first time I saw "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind." For the first time, I realized that anime wasn't just for kids. I wanted to be apart of that world. I wanted to be Nausicaä.

That's the beauty of legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki's work.

Miyazaki made it socially acceptable for Americans to like anime, especially after the commercial success of 2001's "Sprited Away." With the release of Studio Ghibli's newest animated venture "The Secret World of Arrietty," it's likely that Miyazaki may finally be ready to pass the torch.

Miyazaki didn't direct "Arrietty," yet it is impossible not to see his creative influence on the film. He produced and co-wrote the project, but he handed over the directorial duties to longtime apprentice Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who has worked as an animator on every one of the Miyazaki's projects since 1997's epic tale "Princess Mononoke."

To celebrate the release of "Arrietty" -- and to hopefully entice a few of you to actually watch anime -- let's take a look back at Miyazaki's 10 greatest films to date.

Miyazaki's "Ponyo" may not have been his best, but that doesn't mean that it's not a great example of a beautifully drawn animated film, featuring Miyazaki's unique animation and amazing visual technique. However, "Ponyo's" plot was neither compelling nor memorable, making it one of his weakest endeavors to date.

Do you understand how stupid it is to be afraid?

The difference between Disney and Ghibli is the difference between B-movies and "Ben-Hur". There is so much to be seen and felt; Miyazaki and company never needed to fall back on 3D CGI surround-sound crash-and-slash. "Arrietty" is just the latest; it's all about the art and all about the heart.

I agree with this list.
But the last video isn't from Princess Mononoke but from Spirited Away.

I think the Ghibli movies are better than the latest Disney's and more universal.
