Oprah Winfrey Returning To Acting: Eyes Role In Lee Daniel's "The Butler"

Oprah Winfrey

Last May, when Oprah Winfrey ended her talk show afte 27 years, the silver lining -- despite "O Magazine" and that confusing network powerhouse OWN -- was hard to see. Now it seems Oprah may be coming back -- and this time, it's to the big screen.

Winfrey is eying a role in Lee Daniels's ("Precious") upcoming drama, "The Butler." The film follows the story of Eugene Allen, a black man who spent over three decades as the White House's butler, serving eight presidents from 1952-1986; his story was first printed on the pages of The Washington Post just days after Barack Obama was elected as the nation's first black president.

According to THR, Daniels is eying "Red Tails" lead David Oyelowo to play the titular butler and has a laundry list of A-listers linked to the production, Mila Kunis may, apparently, take the role of Jackie Kennedy (??), John Cusack could be Richard Nixon (?!?), and Hugh Jackman is an actual question mark -- he could be anyone from John F. Kennedy to Dwight Eisenhower. Winfrey, however, would play Allen's wife, this despite the fact that she's 23 years older than Oyelowo.

The film was first backed by Columbia and is now struggling to find its financial independence. (Ahem, Oprah!)

This would mark Winfrey's return to acting since 1998's "Beloved," and it may be a good thing; "The Butler" seems to have all the trappings of a Best Picture-in-waiting.

More power to her! She has helped many many Americans. Including the people of NOLA after Katrina. She actually rebuilt an entire community, with the help of her fans as well. It's not just a school in Africa.
Oprah is a fine actress. The Color Purple was an amazing movie, as was The Women of Brewster Place.
Some people can be so negative and hateful.

Wow! I wonder why the Teabagger trolls glommed onto this story? I don't recall Oprah ever being bigoted or especially hateful....

The girl needs the big screen as she is a big girl. Build a school here in the U. S., not in Africa.

She's an amazing actor, so she's been-there-done-that, as it were. IMDB her, then get busy finding a way to see her work. I have no issue with a talented person doing good work in spite of her financial situation; she'll do this as well as her other turns as thespian, in most excellent fashion.

I would also venture to say, Oprah Winfrey probably does lots of work that she doesn't go around bragging about. She's already donated more than she could possibly make doing a movie, to her charitible causes thru the years.

Everyone needs a creative outlet; what's the problem?

She needs the dough. Her OWN Network has flopped more than Romney.

Oprah is a fine actor. I would personally like to see her continue in that genre. However, John Cusack as Nixon? Having a harddddd time picturing that.

The title says she wants to return to the big screen. It's going to have to be a huge big screen.

Her OWN TV network is in the toilet so why not? Return to the big screen sounds weird because I don't recall her ever being on the big screen, unless it was extra work or something.

Her acting in "The Color Purple" is genuinely remarkable.

The Women of Brewster Place.
It will make you cry, if you have a heart.

Or a brain.

She's just once again outgrown the small screen.
