In 1971, director Mel Stuart's adaptation of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" captured the hearts and minds of children around the world. Starring Gene Wilder as the cooky chocolatier, the film would eventually spawn a successful candy brand based on the story.

This past week, David Kelly, the actor who played Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton's 2005 remake of "Wonka," passed away at the age of 82. In honor of "Wonka's" world, let's take a look at where the original cast is now.

Check out the finger nails out on the person resting their hands on Charlie Bucket's shoulders. The only reason someone would have a long pinkie nails (both) that I know of would be to snort cocaine. Weird, I wonder if those are Gene Wilder's?

So why should this be important, and who care. If this is news than what the hell is the news about the stock market, and everthings else we would rather know. So would so one get a real job.

so don't read the article! you had to know what it dealt with before you clicked on the link and if you don't want to know the details, don't click on it. otherwise stop your whining. there's plenty of news about the stock market and the latest murders or drug violence to keep you happy i'm sure.

Well lets see; the article is under Moviefone. I guess if someone wanted to, they could put the stock market here. Please proofread what you wrote; some of it makes no sense.

Doesn't anybody ever proof-read these articles before they are published? Please read the short article under the photo of Gene Wilder. They mention he had a guest role on "Will IN Grace" in 2003. It's Will AND Grace....Though I'm sure Will WAS IN Grace many times!

My favorite "candy" parts in the GW version were: The lickable wallpaper, the marshmallow-like lollipops, and, of course, the chocolate river.

The movie was adapted from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. Never understood the name change. The movie was a pretty lame adaptation of the book. Entire sections were changed. Better adaptation was the newer movie with Johnny Depp.

It is more like the other way around....acting quit him...probably could not get another role...he sucked in the movie anyway....

You're partially right. He was offered a contract after Willy Wonka, but declined. It wasn't until a few years later he tried to get back into acting when he was turned down for several roles that he decided to quit. I think opting to attend Cornell and obtain his DVM was a much better choice over chasing after the Hollywood dream. He now lives in Lowville, NY as a large animal vet where he can live a very comfortable lifestyle on his income and whatever royalties he still receives from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

Some child movie stars like Shirley Temple were also movie stars as adults. Teenage movie star Judy Garland was 17 when she was a star in the movie "The Wizard of Oz"and was also a star in her later years. But some child stars didn't become stars when adults. Apparently the competition is very tough on both Broadway and in Hollywood.

Every chance I get to watch this movie, I do. So do my Grandchildren. They and I really enjoy the first one better then the second. Though we do watch both. Most all of the movies Gene Wilder has been in has given me hours of enjoyment. Like Gene Wilder and Betty White, great actors should continue to act as long as they can.
