Movie Ticket Prices: All-Time High Reached In 2011

Movie Theater

Movies: Now more (expensive) than ever. According to the National Association of Theater Owners (via The Hollywood Reporter), movie ticket prices reached an all-time high last year, rising from $7.89 in 2010 to $7.93 in 2011. Thankfully for consumers, the increase wasn't as bad as the previous year, which saw ticket prices grow $0.39 between 2009 and 2010.

What's to blame for the increasing cost of attending the movies -- y'know, besides the increasing cost of everything, ever? Think of it as a trickle-down issue: studios are producing more and more blockbusters, which cost more and more money (see the budgets of "John Carter" and "Battleship" for examples); exhibitors are upgrading to digital projection and, often times, require 3D projectors to screen the blockbusters; and consumers are getting left with at least some of the bill. 3D tickets cost, on average, $3 more than regular tickets.

That's not to say all hope is lost: ticket prices dropped to $7.83 in the fourth quarter of 2011, which could mean a leveling off in 2012; after all, ticket prices have grown in every year since 1992.

Perhaps that lower national average at the end of the year is helping business: since the ball dropped on 2012, movie attendance has been in an upswing, and many early year releases have done better than anticipated at the box office.

I stopped going to the movies. I love 'em, but paying 12 bucks to have morons kicking the back of my seat, talking on their cell phone, and ruining the movie by talking all the way through it is not my idea of a good time, Add to that extortionate prices of concessions, and I will wait a few months, rent the blu-ray and watch on my big TV in the comfort of my home.

I agree with most of you - if you can't afford to pay those prices, then
don't go. However, even though I am fortunate enough to be able to
pay the prices, I avoid the theatres because I don't think that it is worth
paying that money to stand on a line to wait to get into a jambed packed
theatre, pay $4.50 for a cold hot dog, $4.50 for a cold slice of pizza and
other rediculous costs for candy, soda, etc. When I do go to the theatre,
I usually wait till the flick is out for a week, or so, to at least avoid the
lines and cramped theater. I, personally, don't mind waiting till the flick
comes out on DVD, or cable, sitting in my nice warm living room,
watching the movie at my convenience, on my 63" HD screen and eating/
drinking what I want, when I want.

I haven't been to a movie theater in at least five years. Luckily my sister has a hugs flat screen TV. movies are released on DVD very quickly after they've run in theaters, so I can wait a little while and watch the movies for next to nothing.

Just like everything else - if you think it's too expensive, why are you paying top dollar? I don't waste my money on 3D, and I can usually find a matinee for $5 or $6 (and I live around Boulder, a very expensive area). If we can't go 90 minutes without eating, we bring in a couple cans of soda and some snacks in my girlfriend's purse.

Yup. If it's something of interest to me, Netflix will have it in a few months. Then I can watch it in the comfort of my living room on my 46" full HD bigscreen. Oodles cheaper. Theatre owners can kiss my patootie...

That's why my husband and I have netflix--it means waiting a bit for the movies, and maybe not seeing some of them, but it sure saves a LOT of money. I do feel sorry though for the highschool/college kids who wants a movie date--hits the budget big time I am sure.

The quality of movies is at an all time low and the cost of tickets are at an all time high...go figure....

What? No blame towards illegal downloads? Normally, it's the #1 reason for high ticket prices (eventhough it's bulls**t). Finally, some honesty. Nice to see.............

lol i think they have it all wrong, if people cant afford to go, thats means bad news for the movie theaters, the movie makers and the actors ans actresses

sky high ticket prices, rude people kicking your chair; having loud conversations about nothing. what's not to love about going to the movies?
04:43 PM on 02/12/2012
Add snacks and something to drink and it costs at least $20 to see a movie. Then they wonder why people are into renting movies from Redbox for $1.00 a night instead of going to the theater.

I don't know where you live but movie prices here in NJ even with going to a midweek matinee first showing with senior citizen pricing is not $7.89. The average movie price in NJ is well over the $10.00 mark.

Ditto for NY!

$11 a ticket here in San Diego -- add $4 for 3-D and $4 more if it's in IMAX -- then for the ture movie experince one has to add on the $18 popcorn & large drink combo to have a night out -- so if you do the big tentploe movie in the best setting -- your looking at about $40 to go to a moive -- now if they just had a bar to get a beer or two it might be OK

I rarely go to the movies anymore. Ticket prices are outrageous. I will only go when I am treated to a show. I refuse to pay such high prices for a movie ticket. I just wait for them to make it to a video rental service or just on TV. Producers/Directors need to find cheaper ways to make movies so ticket prices can ultimately decrease to reasonable levels. If not, they will continue to lose viewership.

They need to stop paying actors and actresses $20 and $30 salaries for a movie. That is absolutely ridicules.
