Uggie The Dog Mystery Illness Causing Retirement

It appears Uggie the dog's coming retirement from the silver screen has more to do with a health condition than going out on top. The Jack Russell terrier, a scene-stealer in Best Picture front-runner "The Artist" and a fixture on red carpets and skateboards throughout awards season, is suffering from a neurological disorder that causes him to shake. It's those shakes that will keep Uggie from continuing his film career.

"It's very sad but he is suffering from a mystery shaking syndrome," Von Muller told the Daily Mail. "It is a neurological disorder and we've spent thousands on vets' bills trying to figure out what is causing it but the experts don't really know."

That sounds a lot more serious than what Von Muller told The Daily Beast back in December.

"His health is good, but he has a bit of a shaking syndrome that white dogs get," Muller said. "People will think he's nervous or cold, but it's a neurological thing."

According to Von Muller, Uggie's shaking happens when he's most complacent; despite being afflicted with the mystery condition at the start of filming "The Artist," Von Muller says you could hardly notice anything on camera.

Despite the illness, Uggie will still perform with Billy Crystal at the Oscars. And, despite his coming retirement, you can still peruse this adorable gallery of Uggie pics from the Golden Globes red carpet. Never forget!

While weight training for dogs isn't a recent addition to the canine arena, few people know about it or the benefits. Beginning as an aside to sled dog racing, mushers have long wanted to know who had the strongest dog. In order to determine this, they would hold draft-dog contests. In order to build up their dog's strength, they would provide weight training. While any dog can benefit from weight training, canine athletes can gain huge advantages. Thanks.

Sounds like the same thing those teen age girls are suffering from that Erin Brockovich is investigating.

OK this might be obvious but here it goes. Dogs can also suffer from epislepsy/seizures. I had a dog once that did. So its not really a mysteries illness.

Poor Uggie, sounds like Cushing's Disease to me (shakes when he is most complacent). Friend had a Vizsla that did the same thing.

How uncompasionate to have this poor animal still perform for the enjoyment of humans.
I will definitely change channels when this segment appears on the Oscars. Where's PETA?

Oh please get over it! I am a total animal lover and I see no reason this pooch can't enjoy himself with or without a mysterious illness. Has it ever occurred to you that the little pooch just might enjoy the limelight? A lot of animals do. Just because he shakes doesn't mean he isn't happy. Dah. Would you deny a disabled child enjoyment because they have a disability? I should hope you wouldn't. It is not animal abuse unless the animal is suffering and being forced to do things they don't want to do.

Von Mueller... A suggestion: start putting a tablespoon of micro-particle colloidal silver in Uggies water bowl .for about 2-3 weeks inititallly. If any virus, bacteria or fungal infection in system is involved, it stands to be eradicated. No neg side effects. its all natural. Be sure to use micro-particle sized CS. It will penetrate cells and hard to reach areas in tissue. Suggest U Do not vaccinate. Your call. Good Luck....funny dog.

Here's a question: was Uggie in a place that might have been too warm? Maybe the lighting on the set was to hot? Some dogs have problems with heat and getting cool enough to feel comfortable.

My family had a terrier, years ago, and while we were traveling we stopped to eat. The parking lot had NO shade, so we left a wet towel, a big bowl of water, and left the windows as wide open as we could. We checked on the dog often and he did not drink, look out the window or use the wet blanket, all things to keep him cool. I even soaked him about four or five times to keep him cook, but it did not seem to help. When we were done after an oft interrupted meal, he had the shakes, and was VERY hot.

We called the vet, and he did not have good news. But a 15 year old dog having what seemed neurological problems like this would be very expensive, and he may never be the dog he was before. I had to bring him in to the humane society for professionals to make his final hours more comfortable. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do.

I HOPE that Uggie can be healed, and can go back to "work". He's a cute pup, and I think he actually liked "working", which for him was probably play and a lot of attention.
