'One Shot' Lawsuit: Tom Cruise Movie Involved In Legal Battle

Tom Cruise

The upcoming action film, "One Shot," stars Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, a former military police officer who looks to solve a set of murders. However, it appears the on-camera fisticuffs have made their way behind the scenes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a set of producers are currently entrenched in a legal battle over compensation rights to the film.

The lawsuit states that plaintiff Kevin Messick agreed to develop a movie based on the popular Lee Child novel with defendants Don Granger and Gary Levinsohn. However, after spending five years on the project together, Levinsohn and Granger allegedly began to string Messick along, withholding drafts of the script and eventually cutting him out of the equation entirely.

"Messick says he continued to work on the film until June 29, 2011, when he says he sent an email to Granger stating 'I'm getting the message loud and clear that you have no intention of involving me with [the film] am I wrong?' ... On August 13, 2011, Messick alleges that Granger responded to him in an email: 'I will work with you to get you credit on the film,' the complaint alleges Granger wrote. 'Whatever accommodation of fee we discussed was always predicated on if Gary and I received our deal on the film and I made that clear. We are not receiving our deal on the film.'"

Messick claims that he was to share credit and fees upfront with the duo, and is now suing them for compensation. Sounds like this may be a job for, uh, Jack Reacher?

You can read more about the lawsuit over on THR. "One Shot," starring Cruise, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog, hits theaters February 18, 2013.

Personally, I think he's a few bricks shy of a load, but I will have to give him credit. He does star in some pretty good films. Collateral was a good example. Just my opinion.

I have no idea who Jack Reacher is , but he has gone from 6'2" to 6'5" and 210lbs. to 250lbs. Doesn't seem like anyone here knows about this Reacher fella
11:12 PM on 02/06/2012
Harley, Reacher is 6'5" in all the Reacher books, and normally weighs about 250, except in the book "Tripwire," in which he weighs around 225 (is working as a bouncer, but just finished heavy construction work).

Harley, Just grabbed the book "Tripwire." Reacher was discharged from the army weighing 220, in this book he had been working digging swimming pools and had dropped to 210 lbs., before going back up to 250.

If you have read the Jack Reacher books than you know Tom Cruise is so wrong as Reacher. This is one movie I won't go see.

Too bad Tom Selleck is too old. Give Dwayne Johnson some contacts, Jason O'mara a die job or Peter Sarsgaard. We really don't have much to pick from with the current crop of movie stars.

Kevin Sorbo would be alright. He is tall and rugged and probably around the right age. Did anyone read the new reacher novel? If so what did you think?

Excuse me... I am a very big fan of the Lee Child character, Jack Reacher. These books are entertaining and I am currently reading the latest, "The Affair". Jack Reacher is 6'4" of muscle, brains and complete fearlessness. He also has killer ice blue eyes. Tom Cruise is badly miscast as this character. NO! I could care less about the lawsuit, cast someone who resembles (and can act) the chivalrous, but deadly, Jack Reacher. Yes, Tom is a great actor, he just does not look like Jack Reacher. (whew, feel a little better) I'll still see it though. ha ha!

Or a talented, struggling actor who is large, with light blue eyes! Could be his breakout role. Jack Reacher deserves a large, well muscled actor to portray him. ;o)

I'm tired of all this greed in this country. From hooley weird, to the candidates . when there is so much homeless and people starving in this country, they just throw away millions of dollars on TV adds when they could help people with all that wasted money. Now you got people who worked for years on a project and now the guy isn't getting payed. I would be angry too. Well I know what I am going to do. I will boycot the theaters and I wont buy any dvds unless this crap stops, and as far as the candidates I'm not happy about any of these guys anyway, none of them get my vote, we willsee who steps up to the plate on the issues i've mentioned

How can they have a midget play the part of a giant. I have read 2 of these novels, so I will NOT go see this movie!!!
02:23 PM on 02/05/2012
Why don't they just pay the writer?? Everyone seems to think that characters are created by movie stars and directors, but they are created by WRITERS.
02:05 PM on 02/05/2012
Tom Cruise is not Jack Reacher.
02:23 PM on 02/05/2012
exactly!! jack reacher is 6'5 and 220, is tom cruise wearing stilts for filming??

LOL! my thoughts exactly. If they cast 5'6" tommie, the will blow it!

I guess they will have him standing on boxes and everyone else will have to be standing in trenches. But I guess when you buy the rights, you can place yourself in the starring role.

Loved him in Top Gun, and mission Immpossible movies. Didn't care for Risky Business, but loved Coctails. Like him or not huge power in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise manages to ruin ever movie he's ever been in. Maybe "Risky Business" was his only shining moment and she.. sorry, he.. should have gone away after that. He just can't act and no one takes him seriously about anything. He's nothing more than a short walking joke in Tinseltown.

This is the usual ploy for free publicity for an upcoming movie, second only to when the lead actor goes out and gets arrested for something stupid, like Russell Crowe does just before any of his movies are released. Like everything else in Hollywood, these "lawsuits" are scripted, rehearsed, pre-planned, and announced just before the movie's release. Now you can go see the movie and know you've been duped.
