What has been rumored since before "X-Men: First Class" even opened in theaters appears to be near fact: Matthew Vaughn will return to direct a sequel to the X-Men origin story, with stars like Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence under contract to come back as well.

Not that any of this should be too surprising: the 60s-set "X-Men: First Class" earned rave reviews upon release last June, and then grossed $353 million worldwide. Vaughn -- who also directed "Kick-Ass" -- has been kicking the tires on sequel ideas since April of last year.

"'First Class' is similar to 'Batman Begins,' where you have the fun of introducing the characters and getting to know them, but that takes time," Vaughn told Total Film. "But with the second one you can just get on with it and have a rollicking good time. That's the main difference between Begins and 'The Dark Knight.'"

No word on what path the next chapter in the X-Men story will follow, but speculation is that the sequel could take place later in the 60s.

It was an excellent movie, but I'm not sure how many people would call The Dark Knight a "rollicking good time". Fun, it was not.
