'Chronicle' New York City Stunt: Flying People Spotted Over The Water

First Posted: 01/31/2012 8:58 am Updated: 01/31/2012 8:58 am

Because New Yorkers don't see enough crazy things on a daily basis -- remember that rat the size of a dog; WTF was that? -- one studio decided to launch three flying "people" into the air over the Hudson River.

In a viral stunt to promote the found-footage superhero movie "Chronicle," Twentieth Century Fox sent three remote-controlled flying objects shaped like humans into the New York City skies.

“Since the three main characters of the movie have the ability to fly, we came up with the idea of staging a few 'flying people' sightings around NYC. We achieved that illusion by having 3 custom-made aircraft (which were shaped like human beings) fly above designated areas in NYC and NJ,” said Michael Krivicka from Thinkmodo in a press release.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the flights only lasted about five minutes due to low battery life. However, more flights are currently being planned at undisclosed locations. Get your iPhones, Droids, etc. ready to roll!

"Chronicle," which tells the story of three high-school friends who gain superpowers, hits theaters this Friday.

Wonderful, simply great timing. Just what we need at a time when the FAA is drafting new rules for operating model airplanes guaranteed to placate their friends in the commercial drone industry. I noticed the transmitters being used by the flyers are configured in mode 1, which is much more common in Europe than here. Could there be any significance? I mention this because last year’s debacle was caused by an Australian flying a model too close to ships and buildings in, where else, New York City. I wonder if there is any connection.

Coolest thing I've seen today. I bet obama can fly. He says he can do everything as long as the GOP will let him.

He can only fly in a downward direction same as his re-election chances! Nothing about him uplifting enough to be able to fly gaining altitude.

Calm down, timed one. They only weigh a few ounces and are mostly foam with a little bit of very light wood. Perhaps you failed to notice they were very slow and light. I suspect your most immediate concern should be kids dropping shopping carts on your head from buildings.
