How Much Do A-List Actors Really Make?

Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie

Being an A-list actor means multi-million dollar contracts, expensive rides, more expensive mansions and probably even statues made of caviar (just guessing). But how much does a movie star today really make?

After factoring in household expenses, legal fees and life insurance, that multi-million dollar contract can quickly whittle down to a fraction of its former self (not that the end number ends up making the celeb a 99 percenter).

In this week's New York magazine, readers get a taste of the Celebrity Economy, with a chart tracking the A-lister's average net earnings. So how much can a star such as George Clooney actually reap from his work each year? Let's find out.

Initial fees for roles in movies can hover around $10,000,000. However, that number soon starts to dwindle: $300,000 for boat expenses; $300,000 for children's expenses; $40,000 for medical expenses; $25,000 for charitable contributions; $10,000 for gifts; $486,400 for mortgage payments; and even $80,000 for gardening. After adding everything up (you can read the entire list over at New York), you come to a total expense level of $11,437,360 and a net income of $4,474,640 -- plenty leftover to be living large. (Time to buy that second caviar statue!)

Of course, there ways to add to that net number, too. For instance, if you are popular enough, you can get paid just for having kids (Brad and Angelina received a reported $11 million for their baby photos). Another star perk is the ability to get pretty much everything for free: festivals and events are guaranteed to have giveaways (iPads, leather jackets, year-long car leases; on average "a regular red-carpet walker will receive about $100,000 in free goods and services annually"), which can help an actor cutback on those expenses.

The entire New York feature is pretty fascinating, and a must-read for anyone interested in getting a closer look at the economics of Hollywood; check it out here. Oh, and if you're looking to get in on the action, maybe take up celebrity boat maintenance. Remember, $300,000 per year in expenses?

People earn money designing, building, and selling those boats, maintaining those boats, work in the Marinas...... . People are earning a living from ALL those "expenses" That's the trickle down economy at work Then the pay $4,000,000 in Federal taxes to fund those food stamp and unemployment checks and defense of those who pay nothing. I guess some people would rather they hoard their cash and don't spread it around at all.

This proverbial Celebrity paid more in Federal taxes than 150 MILLION Americans combined!! I would say a "Thank You" is in order

Sounds like the "STARS" need to be smarter with their money and be really thankful for what they get and have. 300,000 for child care really? $486,400 for mortgage payments, DO YOU REALLY NEED A 10,000 SQ FT HOUSE? $80,000 for gardening, THATS JUST STUPID ...... REALLY? ..... WOW. $300,000 for boat expenses - if its that much to MAINTAIN, How much did it cost to buy it? Post that, you're already bragging about everything else. $25,000 for charitable contributions - Wonderful that they gave for charity but when 300,000 is spent on boat maintenance, IS THAT BOAT WORTH THE CURE OF CANCER? ALZHEIMERS? A FORM OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY? FOR WHAT!? PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE THAT THEY ARE NOT. AND WE ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO PAY THEM ALL THAT MONEY.
I AM A RETIRED NAVY SAILOR. I DID 20 YEARS OF SERVICE, ... SERVICE!!!! I started when i was 17, married at 18 making a wopping 250 every two weeks ( thats 500 a month).
While some actor/actress make millions, for what, thats right PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE THAT THEY ARE NOT.

As long as you and millions of others have a TV and go to the movies, rent movies and desire to be entertained by others they will benefit....THANK them for paying $4,000,000 in taxes!! Thats more than 100 million Americans will pay in their lifetimes.
04:50 AM on 06/12/2012
WELL SAID, WHY DON'T WE STOP GOING TO THE MOVIES, GET RID OF TV ETC... I'M WILLING R U? OH AND THE TAX THING, REALLY? OH THAT MAKES IT RIGHT.

Wow, Jennifer Aniston makes $28 million?! Why? Her movies flop. As for Sarah Jessica Parker, I'm not a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker, but she WORKS (trying to fit in)! Now, you got it right with Angelina Jolie; she works with those action movies. I know , I know, she has a stunt double. But there's nothing like a action-adventure actress.

jessica, dump the middle name, u aint special.

i totally agree on your comments on Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker..no matter how hard they try to fit into the Hollywood scene their movies will never make it..no talent as far as I can see. I love Angelina Jolie for everthing she stands for, mainly her independence and her humanitarian work.

I'm not going to claim being a 99%er...although I make about $25,000 before taxes. I just don't feel like being a victim for the rest of my life.

Identifying yourself as a member of the community does not make you a victim. Failing to see that your interests are allied with the economic majority make you one.

The 1% exploit the fact that Americans would always rather protect the (remote) possibility of becoming rich, than face the (inevitable) reality of being poor... or just average.

My co writer and I are about to sell a novel for game and movie. After we pay management and agent 20%, split the money and I get paid back $5000/month to keep my co writer living in LA, the co writer has CA state income tax (on top of federal) to deal with. It all adds up and we don't have huge expenses like housekeepers, publicists, etc. These expenses are why ":the stars" get paid so much. Poor babies. No amount of money would compensate me for the c___ they have to endure with their families being photographed! BOYCOTT ANY IMAGE OF A STAR AND THEIR FAMILY!
02:43 AM on 01/31/2012
Stupid. It is all the people they have on thier payroll. Agents, Publicists, stylists, chauffers, bodyguards, housekeeping, IRS etc. Agents get 15% or better. Travel expenses if they are jet-setting. Even if I made $10M a movie and ony netted $1M, I'd feel very lucky.

If you were one of them, you WOULD be very lucky. Only .000001% of the population does what they do.

Dear Mr. Clooney, AS YOU MUST KNOW, you are NOT good looking and you're way over rated. And frankly, you're getting a little creepy since you've started dating girls half your age. GROW UP for God's sake!

Dear Ms. Shirley, AS YOU MUST KNOW, you are FAT, ugly, and no man ever looks at you. There are many people as unattractive as you, but few who could match your jealousy.

Like I really needed to hear this right now. I can't even pay for my bills, college books or anything else. There's no getting ahead in this economy, but huff post has to tell us how much these people have to spend on boat maintenance, private schools for their kids along with the Nannies as in the Jolie-Pitt case, a nanny for each kid. Boo Hoo!

If they lived like I do ( frugally ) they could spend much more on caviar statues. I'll bet Jen Aniston clips coupons though.

In a time where everyone is complaining about how crappy the economy is and OWS is everywhere, why would I want to hear how priviledged the "A" listers are. If I never see another picture of "SatAngelina" Jolie and her unwashed husband/live in boyfriend (aka The Pitts) it would be too soon. These people are entertainers and don't deserve the excess. They're no better than circus monkeys. Speaking of circus monkeys...let's talk sports.

What is the point of this ridiculous article....are we supposed to feel sorry for the Hollywood elite, or believe they are not that rich and should not put them in the 1% side of the ledger. Who the heck cares what they make...we live in America where people can be rich, poor, or in the middle depending on what paths they chose in life, or many other circumstance we have too deal with in life. Life is not fair, equal or nice to everybody...good, bad, rich, poor, good looking or ugly!
