Viola Davis winning was probably the best moment of the night. It's great that she can point out how Meryl Streep transcends time, while showing us how much of a difference time makes in which types of roles win awards and are popular with audiences.

Pathetic. But then, what did we all think was going to happen?
No surprise that awards given by self entitled, liberal, narcissists would be given to those actors and films that best represent their own twisted sense of "value".
In every case, there is a social statement being made by who won the award, rather
than the actual quality of their work.
None of the winners came close to garnering either the dollars or attention from the public that other movies did that weren't even nominated.
Where was the token award for Harry Potter after the series concluded? The did if for LOTR.
One of the best films I saw all year was Girl/tattoo. Where was that?
Jessica Lange, a crazy old woman, gets an award for playing a "crazy old woman"? How is that "acting". UGH, I hate this crap!!!
02:33 PM on 01/30/2012
I'm sure that all of the SAG members are just devastated by your disapproval of their choices and that the joy of winning an award has been forever tarnished. I wouldn't blame you if you felt the need to drown your sorrows in reruns of the WWF or that toothless guy who jumps in mud puddles looking for big turtles.

Even though Palin had more experience, and far more common sense, than Obama, I didn't think she was ready to be president either. However, considering the incompetent failure we now have as President, Palin would certainly be an improvement!

No Halle Berry wasn't a maid in Monster's Ball --- but she had to resort to getting relentlessly "boinked" by Billy Bob Thornton in the film; the point is not so much being a maid, but having to resort to demeaning roles in order to get the recognition; if you recall, the same year Halle won her Best Actress award, Denzel won Best Actor for Training Day. Now, while there was a lot of hoopla that year, with both of them being African American ---- but, just like Halle had to resort to being "boinked" by Billy Bob, Denzel had to play the role of a dirt cop. When you look at the body of Denzel's work, you gonna tell me that The Hurricane, or Malcolm 'X', or Glory, or Cry Freedom weren't more substantive roles???? Of course they were .... but Hollywood would rather see Halle being boinked by Billy Bob, or Denzel as a dirty cop than to recognize him for something more socially significant ....... again, they got their recognition --- but look at the roles they had to portray in order to get it ....

you are nuts..actors take roles that are challenging..if they thought they were demeaning, they wouldnt take them..get off the racial train..
they are actors.. whether black or white..halle berry and denzel have their pick of any picture
they dont have to take them..just to get a role..
keep the prejudice going..keep us all separated..you need help!! and i hope u get it..so we dont have to listen to your crap!
01:01 PM on 01/30/2012
Kjones has a valid point and so do you. Neither or you are wrong just a matter of opinion. You brought it home when you said that they have their pick of any picture.

Please; the "racial train" goes right through Hollywood and has "stops" at every award show. They've become a venue for social statements. Halle Berry, Jamie Fox, and Katherine Bigelow ALL won as a social statement. And there are plenty more. Its ridiculous to say that Jean Dujardin out performed people like Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Craig, Gary Oldman. Viola Davis basically won in a year that had very few meaningful roles for female characters. Somehow she beat out Meryl Streep, Tilda Swinton, and Glen Close...ridiculous. 3 of the greatest actresses over the last 25 years. But, I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with being black in a movie that portrays how a bunch of rich white people couldn't do anything for themselves.
12:59 PM on 01/30/2012
I just cannot disagree with your point but I think Denzel did not win the Oscar for playing a "Dirty Cop" it was a role far beyond what he had ever played before and it showed versatility. Now in the case of Halle, no one has ever explained to be well enough why she won that Oscar.

You're right, Destiny, actors take challenging roles because that is where they get critical acclaim, personal satisfaction for doing something not done before, and hopefully rewarded with something big: money and awards. And remember, "Training Day" was Denzel's second Oscar after the supporting actor award for the Civil War epic "Glory". People laughed about the "Forrest Gump" trailers, until they saw what Hanks did with that role. Actors want challenges.
11:25 PM on 01/30/2012
Halle won because she fulfilled the white male fantasy. she told the white male to "make her feel good'.
