‘Midnight In Paris' Troubles: Almost Didn't Happen In Paris

Woody Allen

First Posted: 01/25/2012 11:48 am Updated: 01/25/2012 10:17 pm

"Chapter one. He adored New York City. He idolized it all out of proportion. Uh, no. Make that He romanticized it all out of proportion." Woody Allen is known for his long, loving portraits of New York City -- and, in recent years, long swathes of European landscape -- but "Midnight in Paris" was his first tango with The City of Light. As it turns out, it almost didn't get made.

His longtime producer (and sister) Letty Aronson traveled to ol' Paris, scouting locations and hiring crew members but the production was too pricey to finance. (Sacrebleu!) Allen shelved the project until the French government passed a film tax credit in 2009. Production began in Paris in 2010.

Aronson had her own concerns about the production beyond the financial. “When I first read the script, honestly, my impression was, who’s going to come to this movie?” she told The New York Times. "Nobody even knows Gertrude Stein anymore.”

"Midnight in Paris" ended up being Allen's highest grossing film of his career. It snagged four Oscar nominations for best director, picture, art direction and original screenplay -- his 15th nomination in that category.

Any Woody fan knows that the avuncular director has always sat the Oscars out. “It’s just not his thing, really,” Aronson said. “I’m sure that he is appreciative of and gratified by having been nominated, but participating is not his strong suit.”

I guess it goes back to that old joke: I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member.

This could definitely be a franchise series. I'm looking forward to "Midnight in Amsterdam," "Midnight in Rome" and "Midnight in Vienna" right now. If these are hits, he could top them all with "Midnight in Jerusalem."

I gave up on Allen ten years ago, but friends urged me to see 'Midnight in Paris'. I waited until it was at the second run ($3.00) cinema. I have to admit, it was good. The photography and costumes should win Oscars...and Marion Cotillard was awesome.

I like the way the film refuses to pander to anyone who doesn't know the artists and authors portrayed in it. It was magical and funny.

It's indicative of the sick twisted society in which we live. It also shows how little women and children are valued. Need proof, look at how many people are mourning Joe Paterno, a man who knew he was working with a pedophile who brought his victims to work.

The ad in the paper said this movie was hysterical, so funny, blah blah blah, I thought it was a total bore, so did my dau-in-law. I kept waiting for the hysterically funny parts, they never came. I think it grossed so much because of the false hype. I don't like owen Wilson much, his cadence is weird.

I'm glad it worked out for Paris. New York had the Algonquin Round Table with Dorothy Parker, et. al., but I'm not sure that would have been the same as the American expat writers' community in Paris.

Midnight in Cleveland probably wouldn't have done so well.

But "Twilight in Paris" would have raked in the bucks.

A totally wonderful movie, but not quite Allen's "first tango" with the City of Light.
I recall that about a third of his sporadically wonderful musical "Everyone Says I love You" was shot on location in Paris. The highlight of of the movie is a song and dance number featuring Goldie Hawn, beautifully photographed on the banks of the Seine.

I saw Midnight in Paris, Hardly a best pic of the year, proof that wood could film himself taking a dump and critics would praise it
02:01 PM on 01/25/2012
But how do you account for the $148M worldwide gross? Someone besides the critics must like it. Lord knows, he's made other critically acclaimed movies that audiences stayed away from in droves.

well, a lot of folks who saw it didn't like it. But your second point is well-taken. 'Midnight' has been critically acclaimed too – but why?

This was the best movie I have seen in a long time. I didn't want it to end. When does that happen?

I agree. And I just want to watch it again and again.
I had the same feelings about, "The Way", but for different reasons (and no, they weren't religious reasons).
