Gina Carano As Wonder Woman? Hilarious Unsubstantiated Rumor Says Maybe
It was a pretty decent weekend for Gina Carano. The former mixed martial arts fighter led "Haywire" to a solid $9 million debut at the box office, good enough for fifth place in a crowded field (the top choice was the similarly female-fronted action film "Underworld Awakening"). Not only that, but her name was thrown into the hilarious rumor mill for the possibly-never-happening big-screen version of Wonder Woman that Nicolas Winding Refn wants to direct. Hooray!
According to the ever-reliable Page Six, Carano "might be in the running" to play the iconic superhero. No other specifics are given, besides the fact that Carano's debut film was well-received by the likes of Blake Lively, Debra Winger and Calvin Klein.
Of course, whether this version of Wonder Woman ever even happens remains to be seen. During his press rounds for "Drive," Refn often discussed his vision for a Wonder Woman film and how he wanted "Mad Men" vixen Christina Hendricks to star.
"I think Wonder Woman has to be [mature], because it's a very complex character," he told Vulture at Comic-Con last summer. "You know, the whole Wonder Woman concept is 'What if women were more powerful than men?' And I certainly can't come up with a more ideal choice to play that, both consciously because she's very smart but also because of her sensibility and her physicality ... so for me, she's the perfect choice."
Refn's enthusiasm for the project has not yet been matched by Warner Bros. The studio hasn't given him a greenlight on the film, perhaps in the interest of waiting to see how Refn does with the remake of "Logan's Run" he's plannig with beffie Ryan Gosling. Whether he's even thought of Carano for the part -- a part that actually doesn't exist at the moment -- is unknown.
