Richard Gere in 'Arbitrage': Sundance Film Festival's First Oscar Contender?

First Posted: 01/22/2012 1:19 pm   Updated: 01/22/2012 1:19 pm

The nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards won't be announced until Tuesday morning, but that doesn't mean it's too early to start looking ahead to next year's nominations. Judging from the buzz at the Sundance Film Festival, the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony might be a special one for Richard Gere; the veteran actor could be in the heat of the Best Actor race thanks to his performance in "Arbitrage."

Caveats for it being entirely and comically too early to consider anyone for an Oscar next year, but consider: the Nicholas Jarecki-directed financial thriller earned rave reviews following its premiere in Park City, Utah on Saturday night, with at least one well-respected critic ringing the Academy bell for the never-nominated Gere.

"As Park City was blanketed by the biggest snowstorm that Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper says he's seen, the bona-fide first Oscar contender for the 2013 awards emerged Saturday night," wrote Lou Lumenick from the New York Post. "Richard Gere gives the best performance of his career as a crooked financier desperately trying to cover up a $400 million shortage on his books while trying to push through a deal to sell his company."

Jarecki, half-brother of documentary filmmakers Andrew and Eugene Jarecki, based his film loosely on Bernie Madoff.

"I thought, 'What's it like to be one of those major players? Where does he live? He must live in a big house, and he has to have a lot of money, so he must have a lot of problems," he said. "That was how the script began."

Co-starring Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth and Sundance It-Girl ver. 2011 Brit Marling, "Arbitrage" has drawn comparisons to "Margin Call" and could get a distribution deal in the very near future.

Some people are not ashamed of being elders.

Gere's the same age as me. We're not 'elder's quite yet. Another 3-4 years, and after we pass 60 you can start calling us that but not before.

And sadly, there are those who are ashamed of elders.

I have had white hair since I was in my middle 40's and surprisingly there are those who found my hair beautiful. All in the eye of the beholder... and Richard does not look like he is in his 80's - what a horrible and shallow perspective in your attitude. Here's hoping you should look so good now or whenever.

Oscars...Self aggrandizement for people who get paid perverted amounts of money so they can be worshiped by a society of lowered expectations for pretending to be other people. If you want to know what I really think...best not ask.

Well, the 'stars' get payed perverted amounts of money. They soak up so much of a film's budget these days the bread-and-butter working actors are barely making over scale. Some character actors you'd recognize from speaking parts in every fourth film are barely making their rent these days.

I thought Gere was at least nominated for Chicago..guess not. He's grown in his acting..no pretty boy fluff roles. Even Nights in Rodanthe showed ME a fine actor..He and Diane do well together..(they were also..in..darn.can't remember the name). however, aside from that push-up scene in An Officer and a Gentleman(it was SO powerful when he cried "I got no where else to go)..A small film called "Hatchi" (sp?) based on a japanese true story and film...man and his dog..was beyond a tearjerker. I will have a crush on Richard until he's 90!

aside..that photo of DeNiro..OMG..he LOOKS like Madoff!

I agree. Richard Gere is this gem who has been overlooked by the awards in general. He's a fine actor..always has been. Gere in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" was one of my favorite roles of his. He's never gotten the props he's deserved....

American Gigolo is a movie you don't see on the t.v.   My only really bad memory is the one of him in King David where he goes skipping and dancing in what can only be called diapers.

OH NO! If Danny Kaye and Bill Clinton had a child, it would be Richard Gere (look at the pix).

An Oscar for Richard Gere is long overdue. Seriously, Nicolas Cage and not Richard Gere?

Richard Gere should have gotten some Oscar love for his performance in Chicago. He's a wonderful actor, and if his performance is that noteworthy, I hope he gets an Oscar for real.
