'Red Tails' White House Screening: What Watching A Movie With The President Is Like

Obama Movie

One of the perks of being president is the opportunity to live in the White House, a 132-room mansion -- complete with bowling alley and private movie theater. So what's it like to actually attend a screening there? According to "Red Tails" director, Anthony Hemingway, the theater could use some work.

Hemingway, the "Red Tails" cast, producer George Lucas and surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, were recently invited to the White House to screen the WWII action feature for the First Family. Writing about it in this week's Hollywood Reporter, the director discussed the generous hospitality provided by President Obama and the rest of his staff.

After an extensive background check (of course), the guests showed up to the White House. There, they were treated to a meet-and-greet by the Commander-in-Chief himself, where they took pictures and went on a private tour. Obama also gave a touching introduction before the film began.

However, the theater wasn't as presidential as you'd expect.

"When they escort you into the theater, you definitely feel like you're in a very comfy, intimate space. But it doesn't have cup holders, which made me nervous because I was afraid of spilling my drink ... The theater isn't set up that well. The sound could be better. The projector needs to be upgraded. It needs a Hollywood pro to go in there and redesign it."

A Hollywood pro? Perhaps a certain "Star Wars" creator who developed the surround sound company, THX? (That's a George Lucas reference, if you haven't figured it out.)

Where the theater lacked in sound quality, it made up in popcorn. "It had just the right amount of salt and butter," Hemingway said. "It was some of the best popcorn I've ever tasted."

The White House: Great popcorn, bad surround sound.

I love it - they said "a Super Bowl party with bipartisan members of Congress". I knew it was closed to Dems only.

And while they are at it, how about updating my home. It needs painted, new roof, new windows, and remodeling inside. And I want the best luxury money can buy. Oh, a new car too, mine is 15 years old.

Well the movie wasn't that great. Pearl Harbor was better.

My 18 year old daughter and a friend went and saw this movie over the weekend she thought it was excellent!!! I wish I had a private screening as my daughters main complaint was the movie theater was crowded as tickets sold out fast!

Many many years ago I had a friend who wrote for the original Star Trek, Jerome (Jerry) Bixby. Among other things he did was Day of the Dove.

I suggest the Humans and the Klingons laugh at the evil that is embodied in trolls like Putz/Lutz/Whoever.

Lets forget about carp like this and worry about what is good for America regardless of who puts out the good ideas, Reps or Dems.

And no Reps, I don't exist in some fantasy world. Just using it as a metaphor to show no matter how far apart we are both sides can agree that evil is...well...evil, and we shouldn't keep buying into the fear that is being artificially produced to keep us helpless and battling each other.

"Apparently this photo was taken almost a year ago, but it’s the first I’ve seen it. It’s President and Mrs. Obama wearing 3-D glasses in the White House theater. They wore them to watch a commercial that aired during the Superbowl."

"But as health care and other policy issues began to heat up, the cocktail receptions went away, without much explanation. The last one was held in the spring of 2009.

Lately, though, in the wake of renewed calls for bipartisanship, the schmoozy receptions have re-emerged, but in a new form: in front of the big screen.

The Obamas have opened up the White House theater and the elegant State Floor rooms to host a string of viewing parties in recent months. They have invited guests over to take in the Super Bowl last month, new movies (FLOTUS screened Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” for about 50 guests in November) and random sporting events such as last week’s Chicago Bulls-Charlotte Bobcats game. Not a fan are you? Some of the commercials, and I think some special coverage of the festivities (not the game), was in 3-D.
06:35 PM on 01/22/2012
they didn't say commercials... nice try
06:36 PM on 01/22/2012

I guess you don't realize that the commercials during the Super Bowl is part of the coverage. That's okay I didn't expect for you to think about it.
06:06 PM on 01/22/2012
come on, that movie is NOT in 3D... looks like he had all the family there to help them spend taxpayer dollars

Is it pure lazyness that keeps you from finding answers to questions? The picture with the 3d glasses is of the 2009 Superbowl. Now maybe you can stop acting whining about trivial things.
06:21 PM on 01/22/2012

Thank you, I've been putting that link in every so often myself.

It's rather painful to have to defend something so simple and yet a part of our country's history to so many who are taking offense at something so small.

The Presidents who have viewed movies, the movies, the guests, it's part in the rnovations and the presidents who stood there practicing their speeches. All of that is part of our, America's, history

Glad to be on the same side as someone that isnt hateful or lazy.. Its actually a pretty cool story about that room.

Shouldn't have bothered. Most can't read. Those who can, don't comprehend. Concepts are too far beyond them.

Of course, to satisfy the Reps, he could get rid of the theater and go out like normal people to the movies. With limos, Secret Service, weapons checks, Etc.

There is a reason why these luxuries have been included for EVERY president since at least Pres Truman.

Good point, if he had to go out they would complain of the money he spent to go to the movies. Last fifty years almost not one word on the president and vacations. This guy gets in and every amateur bean counter comes out of the closet. I suggest some cheese to go with their whine.
06:03 PM on 01/22/2012
why would that be different than what they do now?

Quite simply, they don't. Neither the President or the First Lady have been to a Hollywood Premiere or a local movie theater.

I also am sure this room was created before Obama got into office and therefore may have been built when we were in a better economy. I too have a theater room and when family comes over, you can smell the hate. I'm sorry that the economy is the way it is, but Obama was not to blame and Obama is not the answer. It took years to destroy the economy so expect it to take even longer to fix. Americans are also very lazy and most lack the mentality to become entrepreneur. We rely on secure jobs, expect raises and do nothing then what is the minimal expected from us. Then we complain because we get laid off, companies close, etc. I hate hearing about the 99%. America, if you’re tired of being the 99%, then breaks out of the shell. Do what most don’t? It is that easy. Need work, create work for yourself and stop crying. No one makes more than the boss, so be your own!!

This president and first lady are the only occupants who have used their own money for renovations. Moreover, he wasn't't complaining about the system. It was the guests.
