Plummer has never won an Oscar, partly because he's spent his entire career blowing off the people you need to butter up. This time, he knows the statuette is his to lose, so he's approaching the role of humble elder statesman like the great actor he is. He began his Globes speech with a possibly calculated senior moment, mumbling something irrelevant about "King Kong" and "Rin Tin Tin" (give him credit for not simply shouting, "Who else in this category starred in 'The Sound of Music,' bitches?"), then went on not only to praise his "distinguished competitors" but to "apologize" to them, "most profusely." He did a cute grandfatherly thing with Ewan McGregor -- calling him a "scene-stealing swine," but in an affectionate way -- and ended with a heartfelt tribute to his wife of 42 years, "whose bravery and beauty haunts me still." Bottom line: He killed it. We'll see him again in February. Score: 8
