Meryl Streep: 'Iron Lady' Margaret Thatcher Wouldn't Fit In With Today's Conservatives (VIDEO)

First Posted: 01/10/12 03:25 PM ET Updated: 01/10/12 03:47 PM ET

You don't have to admire the political record of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher to appreciate Meryl Streep's virtuoso acting performance in "The Iron Lady." Rarely has such an instantly identifiable movie star disappeared so completely into a role.

The film presents a Thatcher long past her prime: retired from public life, grappling with dementia, struggling to determine if the husband with whom she so affectionately bickers (played beautifully by Jim Broadbent) is real or just a ghost. Only through a series of flashbacks -- or are they sense memories? -- do we see the ornery warrior who launched battalions, crushed unions, and shrugged off the deaths of 10 Irish Republican hunger strikers.

"The Iron Lady" has drawn fire from critics who say it glosses over Thatcher's historical record, presenting her as a sympathetically dotty old-timer instead of a driven and (the assumption goes) dangerous ideologue, so I asked Meryl Streep how portraying the divisive leader has changed her view of the real Lady Thatcher -- and whether, having embodied a politician famous for her backbone, she had any advice for the occasionally wishy-washy Barack Obama. She pointed out that Thatcher's views on subjects like abortion and gay rights were more nuanced than some people realize: "She would be drummed out of the American conservative party -- there would be no question."

Here's how our conversation went.

I don't understand some of the comments, well that isn't anything new, I hardly ever understand most of the comments posted by people here on the HP. However, I don't see how Meryl Streep is confirming she is into liberalism. She is simply pointing out the differences between Margaret Thatcher and the NOW conservative party. Meryl Streep is iconic! I think it is marvelous that she is still relevent in today's acting world. You rarely see a leading lady over 30 now a days. Congrats Meryl, I will definitely see this!

whats the difference between now, and before??? how is cutting spending and borrowing, all of a sudden extreme???

Big shock, Streep is a raving, out-of-touch, detached liberal. Granted, she is a tremendous (and yet somehow still overrated) actress; but she is part of the 1% you all want to demonize. She believes her beloved Obama give's a damn about any of you. Why should he? She doesn't. You people (and by that I mean ignorant, easily misled) liberals will continue to lap it up--believing the powers that be in Washington actually care what you experience in life--they don't, they only care about your continued servitude to their cause. They want your worship. Your adulation. Your money. "They" believe you are stupid and worthless. "They" believe they are much better at spending your money than you are. And you will continue to willingly give that money to them.

I guess they are right about you after all...

Continued from mmsuki reply below...

Liberals elites are always so ready to entrust YOUR money to the government. "Raise our taxes!" the Matt Damon's of the world continue to say. WHY??? So the government can squander it on interest free loans to billionaire bankers and expanding outdated, antiquated entitlement programs which have NEVER been destined to work as a long-term solution.

I've got an idea Mr. Damon. How about YOU push for the government to actually lower taxes, which will benefit everyone in these demanding times; and YOU insist that people like YOU (and your elite ilk) make a solemn pledge to donate ALL of you money to needy causes. You can even determine the causes. You don't need Obama or Barney Frank's input at all.

But this continued facade of well-meaning executed by the Elites (in Hollywood and elsewhere) whereby they are perfectly comfortable giving away YOUR money to a bunch of fools beholden to various special interest (none of whom are YOU) is just sheer folly.

I'm glad Meryl Streep donated about 1-4% of her total net worth to charity.

Call me when she give's away 50% or more. That's how much her beloved Liberal leaders want to take away from the true entrepreneurs of this country who are our only hope for a return to long-term propsperity.

This "out-of-touch, detached liberal" was cited by Forbes magazine as being #8 of the top 30 most generous celebrities in America.

She and her husband have donated over $2 million to charity in order to help those less fortunate.

Nice, ignorant diatribe.

Hello mmsuki. I took the opportunity to read about Ms. Streep's generous donations to the efforts in Haiti. Thank you for posting that so I may cure my ignorance. I truthfully don't have anything against Meryl Streep. My problem is with Liberalism as a whole. I will never subscribe to the belief that governments are better than individuals at creativity, accomplishment, work ethic and the proper execution of the entrepreneurial spirit upon which America was allegedly founded.

Ms. Streep gave $2M to humanitarian causes which benefited the people of Haiti. Great! I applaud her for it. Meanwhile, we have millions of people right here in America who suffer every single day from poverty, starvation and more; and all our government leaders are worried about is implementing a power grab which will transfer even more leverage into their hands.

Liberalism isn't about compassion and hope. It is about power. A power based on the belief that THEY are smarter (and therefore better equipped to make the decisions) than WE are. It's that simple.

Ms. Streep donated $2M to international causes. Once again I say, "thank you."

You know when I'll be impressed?

When she somehow manages to budget herself to live on a mere pittance of $2M per year, pays cash for a nice, reasonable, safe and secure home (maybe $650,000) and donates every other dollar she make's every single year to both domestic and international causes.

"Meryl Streep Offers Advice To Obama"
Would you and DC mind switching to twin sets and pearls? As it would facilitate my forthcoming portrayals of you both.

Does being able to answer questions for extended periods demonstrate the degree of quality in those responses? Or serve to signal some measure of inadequacy in the questioning. Bearing in mind the following.
“You don't tell deliberate lies, but sometimes you have to be evasive”: MT

While I respect Ms Streep, I cannot imagine anyone (under the age of 70) will go see this movie. What the so called Hollywood machinery fails to realize is that the audience will not go see movies just because of stars and because critics tell us to.

Remind me again how the box office lit up with J.Edgar?

What they fail to realize is that people want to see biographies about people who we care about. People who can inspire us (Gandhi, William Wallace). I'm sorry but Margarat Thatcher is as dull a subject as J.Edgar Hoover was.

"..any advice for the occasionally wishy-washy Barack Obama." By occasionally wishy washy, Mr. Hogan, do you mean taking out Somalian pirates or Bin Laden? Or do you mean he doesn't rule by fiat, as you'd like, but by attempting consensus. And when that doesn't work, he pivots like a good boxer to a better position, as he is in now. As the saying goes, he's playing chess while you're playing checkers.

What remains after all of the weeping, vitriol, hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing of my so-called liberal cohorts is that Thatcher and Reagan were democratically elected by the masses. The people. Remember them? Where were the liberals and progressives who should have risen up against Thatcher and Reagan and denied them office? Oh. You weren't born yet or could not vote? Well, where were they a year and a half ago when the Tea Party swept into congress all of these right-wing extremists who do not have a clue about how to govern?

Attacking Meryl Streep is all you have? A fellow liberal? For magnificently doing her job? For bringing us a unique insight and perspective on the sad journey tha political conservatism has made since Thatcher and Reagan? Really? There appears to be more truth and substance in her make-believe than in the real, collective lives and intelligence and industry of those attacking her on this post.

I wonder if the blowing up of the General Belgrano (Argentine Ship) during the Falklands will get a mention. A Ship that was outside the 200mile exclusion zone and infarct going further away from it. Thatcher ordered it to be sunk. 323 People on board died that day. b****.

She crushed unions, and ushered in the era of deregulation and fiance. Britain now has almost zero manufacturing base, and a industry that is basically paper pushing that took a massive blow in 2007 that only recovered through massive government intervention. Britain has also isolated themselves from the EU thinking themselves above it, sadly for Britain, they are an island with nothing to offer the world economy. The empire is on it's last breath as a "World" power, thanks to the stupidity of Margaret Thatcher.

Morrissey was right, we;d all love to see her on a guillotine.

Yeah and the right-wingers call the jobless lazy. Er, there is no jobs in Britain Thatcher tore industry down and successive Governments have ignored the problem instead focusing on the financial services in the City of London which Thatcher deregulated and it's now the most corrupt financial centre in the world. Meanwhile in the real world, the "lazy" folk the lazy minds of the right-wing like to call them, struggle to get a job.

And today's democrats who run to another state to avoid voting on issue that they don't like aren't like the old liberals like Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, the Kennedys and George McGovern. I didn't like thier politics but they had b*lls and fought for what they believed in. They didn't run away like school boys and girls.

That was a very different, much less partsan, time, a time when lifelong Dems like my parents would say of Eisenhower and Nixon, "I didn't vote for him, but he's my President, and I support him." Can you imagine anyone saying that now?

Furthermore, Washington is quite different from the statehouse. Some of the ideologues running states now (Walker, Kasich, Daniels, Scott, Perry) leave no recourse. The people you cite had nowwhere to run because the were federal. Your analogy is apples and oranges, I fear.

"occasionally wishy-washy Barack Obama" "Occasionally" Really? Come on, Hogan. We get enough this kind of language from politicians and pundits---is there no relief, no reprieve from this kind of blunted description? Don't tell us that you believe "occasionally wishy-washy" is an accurate way to describe our president, who runs away even before a fight begins if he thinks he could possibly lose or even get a scratch for that matter! Obama only sounds tough when he faces either "no enemy" or his opponents have been rendered helpless on the subject and therefore he knows he has the upper hand. What we have here is a classic "coward." What good is an imposter in the White House when he only fights when there is no fight? Are we seriously saddled with this guy or a clown from the right? Is that the best we have? It's a bad sign for the country and the entire world if it is.

It's easy to have balls and courage behind a keyboard, knowing that what you say and do doesn't affect anyone. The really funny thing is that the very people who use that kind of language are the main ones who run crying that they've been jumped on. I've worked with people like you who bark real loud, but cringe in terror when confronted. President Obama accomplishes more in the first two minutes of each of his days that you will accomplish in a lifetime. What Obama being in the White House has shown is what a country of hypocrites and uneducated people we have living in America. All of you talk about Obama this and Obama that and others talk about the founding fathers. None of you obviously know anything about the Constitution and how it works. What you really want is a dictatorship not a democracy. And the funny thing is that most of the rest of the world would trade their leaders in a heartbeat for President Obama who has improved relations and the reputation of the U.S. Only in America is the desire for compromise seen as cowardice.

Thanks for the assessments/predictions about me; do you regularly make these kinds of diagnoses about people you do not know? Shouldn't you be charging a fee for your analyses? My comments about Obama obviously upset you--fortunately your response does not have the same affect on me. Anyone who announces, more or less, that he/she is more intelligent than those of us who have a different view is not too bright. I and many others watched Obama make bold statements and back away as soon he confronted resistance on numerous issues--you apparently were not watching. You on the other hand, have no evidence to support your comments regarding me or the other people you think you know. I "cringe in terror" when confronted with adversity? By the way, aren't you behind a keyboard? Maybe I have underestimated the scope of your expertise--you seem to know me and others like me, as well as what "most of the rest of the world" wants--so maybe you don't need a keyboard. NOTE: Your name "listentome" screams that people typically don't--I wonder why. They must be busy "crying" and "cringing" and comtemplating how "uneducated" they are as they fumble through the Constitution in collective confusion. Obama was the first politician I ever donated money to--I voted for him with emphasis! I think (I'll double check) the Constitution gives me the right to be dissappointed with him.

Here, let me help you understand my comment--Obama surrenders to the right wing politicians when he is confronted by them--he caves in every time; it's flat out embarrassing. Just look at his hyped up signature legislation--affordable health care. What a collapse. Single-payer was scrapped by Obama the instant the republicans started yelling at him. What we got is something that will never be affordable. How could it be when this legislation mandates that on the way to pay the providers, the premiums stop off at insurance company first. Insurance is one of the more lucrative businesses in the country and so we are left with virtually no way to prevent premium escalations from one of the greediest industries in existence. That bogus legislation was just the beginning. Obama crumbled on closing Guantanamo, ending the Patriot Act (or at least reducing it's bs in scope) and every environmental issue that has come up. He has maintained many of W's policies and failed to stand up to Wall Street. The insurance industry helped craft Obama's health care plan and the bankers deigned the bailout and the refinancing debacles he has timidly put forth.

My comment was intended to point out how badly the media fails us all when they assess Obama as they did. There isn't anything occasional about his being "wishy-washy." If anything he is only "occasionally" not "wishy-washy" as in the example you gave.

Do you still disagree?

If you loved the gulags of russia...and maybe you did....then you would certainly hate those who created an atmosphere of intolerance of left wing dictatorships. They certainly did.
