Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs book ''Princess of Mars,'' ''John Carter'' finds John Carter, a Civil War veteran, transplanted to Mars to stop a brewing battle between the planet's natives. Part ''Avatar,'' part ''Star Wars,'' the Andrew Stanton-directed film has been in development for years, and will give audiences a chance to get to know Taylor Kitsch as a leading man. The ''Friday Night Lights'' star features in three major 2012 releases: ''Carter,'' ''Battleship'' and ''Savages.''
