Bane isn't the only character in the new trailer for 'The Dark Knight Rises' that has an impenetrable accent. There's also Michael Caine as trusty butler-cum-Batman-confidant Alfred, who unfurls a British-accented woe-is-me monologue that sounds ripped out of 'Don' You Go Rounin' Roun to Re Ro.' "You are as precious to me as you were to your own mother and father," Caine slurs into something nearly unintelligible. "I swore to them that I would protect you -- and I haven't." You know what else he hasn't done? A better version of his own voice than Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.
In 'The Trip' -- one of the 50 best movies of 2011 according to your friendly Moviefone editors -- both Coogan and Brydon have an epic Caine-off (first heard on the BBC series from which 'The Trip' is based) -- and both sound more like Caine than Caine himself. At least how Caine sounds in this 'Dark Knight Rises' trailer.
Not that anyone should be totally surprised. When Caine attempted to do his own Caine impression back in January, it was a little underwhelming. Said Caine at the time, "I sound like a bloody moron." Or Alfred. You sound like Alfred.
