Generally the business of sequels is pretty obvious: a movie is good enough to warrant seconds. But, sometimes, bad movies are inexplicably smacked with a part deux (or -- gasp -- even trois). Count this as one of those times: according to Variety, Sony pictures is toying with a sequel to the phoned-in comedy 'Grown Ups.' The 2010 buddy movie was marketed as catnip for SNL-lovers of yore, reuniting Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider and despite being unanimously panned, 'Grown Ups' grossed $271 million worldwide. (And you thought "Jack and Jill" earning $79 million thus far was shocking.)
For now, 'Grown Ups 2' is just a twinkle in Sony's eye and Sandler's involvement is apparently "contingent on the script." (This would be his first sequel.) But hey, crazier things have happened: ahead, 9 bad movies that somehow got a second chance at the multiplex.

-
'Evan Almighty'
Rotten Tomatoes: 23%
After the mostly poorly received 'Bruce Almighty' (49 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating) earned nearly $490 million worldwide, a sequel was inevitable. Unfortunately, even the velvety sound of Morgan Freeman's voice -- nor Teflon Steve Carell -- couldn't save this poor soul.

'Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed'
Rotten Tomatoes: 21%
This time, Scoobs and co. crack the case of how to soil a beloved cartoon series. -
'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel'
Rotten Tomatoes: 21%
This squeakquel was one of the worst-reviewed movies of 2009, but that didn't stop audiences from returning to the franchise in droves. 'Chipmunks' earned $443 million worldwide, and spawned a third entry, due in theaters next week.
-
'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'
Rotten Tomatoes: 20%
The first film in Michael Bay's super-franchise was polarizing enough; the sequel less-so, if only because everyone seemed to trash it -- this despite worldwide grosses reaching $836 million around the globe. 'Revenge of the Fallen' proves that you can travel the River Nile, but you still can't escape this cacophonous mess.
-
'Sex and the City 2'
Rotten Tomatoes: 15%
The only glass we raised this time was to mourn the end of favorite gal pals.
-
'Weekend at Bernie's II'
Rotten Tomatoes: 11%
"Didn't we have a wild time when we dragged around that dead guy?"
"...Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
The Roman numeral adds class, obviously.
-
'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer'
Rotten Tomatoes: 7%
It's hard to choose a winner of the worst horror movie. But this one loses out almost on lack of title-creativity alone.
-
'Van Wilder 2: The Rise of Taj'
Rotten Tomatoes: 7%
Before he became Harold's better half -- and before he worked in the White House with President Barack Obama -- Kal Penn starred in this sequel to 'Van Wilder.' Only problem? It didn't actually focus on Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds, pre-fame). Kal Penn's Taj teaches a class on shenanigans in 'VW2,' but some things cannot be learned -- like making an enjoyable movie.
-
'Big Momma's House'
Rotten Tomatoes: 6%
Martin Lawrence in a pink moo-moo was a surprise hit despite terrible critical response, which could mean only one thing: sequel! And, sadly for you, threequel.
