Replacing actors in an already established series doesn't always work out for the best (Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan in 'Sum of All Fears,' Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling in 'Hannibal,' etc.). Initially, this would have been the case with next year's 'The Bourne Legacy,' with Jeremy Renner starring in the role made famous by Matt Damon. However, earlier reports confirmed that the 'Avengers' star would not be playing Jason Bourne, but an entirely new character. Not that fans won't compare the two stars.

Renner recently spoke with Empire about taking over the 'Bourne' franchise, confirming the new character plot line and also assuring fans that, while this movie will be different, the spirit of the last three films will not be forgotten.

'My character is called Aaron Cross, ... but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it's a new programme [sic] and new characters.' So is Treadstone still involved? 'Yeah, it's that same deal, it's just a new set of agents with a different leash. It's the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you'll know it's a Bourne movie.'

'The Bourne Legacy' currently has an Aug. 3, 2012 release date, three months after Renner's other action blockbuster, 'The Avengers,' hits theaters. Tony Gilroy, who wrote the previous two 'Bourne' films, directs.
