They said it wouldn't last -- and they were right! Predictable news out of Hollywood this Halloween: Kim Kardashian and her beloved husband of 72 days, NBA Kris Humphries, will divorce. (More like Hollyweird, amirite?) The couple married in front of friends, family and paid media members on Aug. 20 of this year, and while they spent a reported $10 million on the nuptials, they made nearly $18 million on the media rights for their blessed union. Not bad! Though the finances of the Kardashian/Humphries marriage/divorce pale in comparison to something else that debuted on the weekend of Aug. 20: 'Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.'
Released on Aug. 19, the Robert Rodriguez 4D kids movie (the fourth "D" is for Aromavision!), earned just $11.6 million from over 3200 theaters during its opening weekend, bad enough for a third place finish behind weekend two of 'The Help' and weekend three of 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes.' Back then, you would have thought the Kardashian wedding was the clear winner of this non-competition, but, wrong: after 73 days, 'Spy Kids 4' is still playing in 151 locations around the country, where it earned an estimated $60,000 over the weekend. The Kardashian-phries -- for lack of a better term -- are out of theaters for good.
So, congratulations to Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Joel McHale and Ricky Gervais (as the talking dog)! You all produced something more lasting than Kim and Kris. Well done.
