Back in May, Deadline reported that Matt Damon was interested in making the spec script 'Father Daughter Time' -- about a criminal who goes on the lam with his daughter -- his directorial debut. One month later, Damon told Vulture that he was going to have John Krasinski co-star in his directorial debut. Many still assumed that would be 'Father Daughter Time,' but -- four months later -- that appears incorrect: Variety reports that Damon will direct himself and Krasinski in an untitled drama that the pair co-wrote after Krasinski developed the initial concept with author Dave Eggers. Damon will play a salesman who has his life turned over after visiting a small town. No word yet on whether Ben Affleck is involved. [Variety]

Good news for people who love writing complaint letters: Warner Bros. has finally greenlit its live-action remake/reboot of the Japanese anime series 'Akira' for Jaume Collet-Serra ('Unknown') to direct. Casting hasn't begun, but it appears 'Tron: Legacy' star Garrett Hedlund is a frontrunner, this despite the fact that the source material features Japanese characters with names like Kaneda and the titular Akira. This version of 'Akira' will be set in New Manhattan instead of Neo Tokyo, so hopefully the casting can be explained within the story. [Variety]

When politics met Hollywood: Sony may move Kathryn Bigelow's planned Osama bin Laden movie from its current release date of Oct. 12, 2012 to later in the year or possibly 2013. The reason? To avoid making the film a political lightning rod in the final weeks before the 2012 presidential election. [Deadline]

Speaking of Sony, the studio is closing in on a deal to acquire the rights to 'Assassin's Creed' which would likely get turned into a franchise. Take that, 'Resident Evil'! [Variety]

DreamWorks Animation has won the rights to 'Captain Underpants,' the popular children's book series by Dav Pilkey about a pair of fourth graders who hypnotize their principal into becoming a superhero. Seeing a principal walking around kids in his or her underwear is usually creepy, but here it's supposedly fun. [Deadline]

Congratulations to 'The Big Year,' which may wind up being the second-worst wide release of 2011 behind only 'Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star.' [LAT/24 Frames]
