CATEGORIES Movie NewsLast night we reported that Mel Gibson and writer Joe Eszterhas were teaming up with Warner Bros. to make a movie about Jewish hero Judah Maccabee and the story of Hanukkah. It probably wouldn't be a big deal if Gibson hadn't claimed that "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" after getting booked for a DUI five years ago. As one could imagine, some Jewish leaders aren't exactly excited about the news and they are not holding back.
In the words of Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of Los Angeles's Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance:
Mel Gibson has shown nothing but antagonism and disrespect to Jews. First of all there were the anti-Semitic remarks he made, his portrayal of Jews in 'The Passion of Christ.' I'm talking about those Jews who did not accept Christ, they were all portrayed as idiots, buffoons or people who were tyrants, with a very unfair portrayal. He's had a long history of antagonism with Jews. Casting him as a director or perhaps as the star of Judah Maccabee is like casting Madoff to be the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, or a white supremacist as trying to portray Martin Luther King Jr. It's simply an insult to Jews."Ouch. Can't say that Mel didn't have it coming, though.
Head on over to The Hollywood Reporter to read what other Jewish leaders had to say about the upcoming film.
