Who is Marion Cotillard playing in 'The Dark Knight Rises?' The official answer -- and the one she gave to MTV at the premiere of her new movie 'Contagion' -- is that her character is an original creation of director Christopher Nolan. But! Since we all know (or at least strongly suspect) that Nolan loves to mislead us about his movies, we have to side with the MTV News reporter who asked her pointblank if she's lying.

Cotillard will reportedly be playing Miranda Tate, a board member at Wayne Enterprises, but speculation is high that she'll really play Talia Al Ghul -- the daughter of Liam Neeson's 'Batman Begins' villain Ra's Al Ghul. Word that Neeson will be shooting some scenes for the sequel have given that theory more credence.

Tate could simply be a cover for Ghul's true identity, which raises the question: why reveal anything about Cotillard's character at all? Wouldn't it be simpler for Nolan, his leading lady and everyone involved to just keep mum?
